Choose a food delivery service by comparing the same restaurant, basket, delivery time, and destination in each app—then judge the delivery estimate and the full checkout total, not just the advertised delivery fee. Availability and charges vary by address and order, and there is no comparable nationwide evidence establishing which major service is most reliable.

How to compare food delivery services for your address

There is no useful nationwide winner for every diner: a service must list the restaurant, reach your address, and accept the order at the time you want it. Use a local, order-specific comparison instead.

  1. Check availability. Enter the delivery address in each service and see whether it lists the restaurant for the desired time.
  2. Compare the delivery window. Look at the estimate shown for the same time and, if possible, the same restaurant and order. Treat it as an estimate unless the service explicitly promises otherwise.
  3. Build the same basket. Match the items and quantities. Record item prices and discounts before comparing fees. If the restaurant is only available on one service, any comparison with another restaurant is approximate.
  4. Review every checkout line. Compare delivery, service, distance-related and small-order fees, other applicable charges, estimated tax, optional tip, and the final amount due.
  5. Check alternatives. For an occasional order, compare the app total with pickup or the restaurant’s own ordering channel when available.

A simple note or spreadsheet can capture the result:

Compare What to record
Service and restaurant Whether the restaurant serves your address at the desired time
Delivery window The estimate displayed before payment
Items and discounts Matched items, quantities, item subtotal, and applied discounts
Fees and tax Delivery fee, service fee, other charges, and estimated tax
Tip and total Optional tip and the final checkout amount
Membership Any applicable discount and the order conditions for receiving it

Checkout is the meaningful point of comparison because fees can depend on location, merchant, distance, order size, demand, or local rules. An advertised fee or a prior order may not represent the basket you are placing now. DoorDash and Uber Eats each describe multiple possible fee categories in their consumer fee information and Uber Eats fee information.

How to compare the full price

A delivery order’s total can include more than food and delivery. Compare the item prices as well as the fees: the same restaurant’s items may be priced differently across ordering channels, and discounts can change the subtotal used to qualify for other offers.

  • Item prices and discounts: Record the price for each matched item and any discount applied. Do not assume pickup and delivery menu prices are identical.
  • Delivery fee: The charge for delivery may vary by merchant or order conditions.
  • Service and other fees: Depending on the order, there may be service, distance, small-order, priority, regulatory, marketplace, weather-related, or other charges.
  • Tax: The amount shown before payment may be an estimate; the final receipt can differ.
  • Tip: Where the app permits, treat it as a separate, optional amount in your comparison. DoorDash says customer tips go to the Dasher and are optional.

The Federal Trade Commission’s 2026 notice on online food delivery fees describes studies and reporting that found delivery totals above pickup or in-store prices. The reported differences vary by study and context, so they are not a universal markup or a prediction for your order. The practical takeaway is to compare the actual item prices and checkout totals for your own basket.

DoorDash fees can depend on market and order

DoorDash’s current fee explanation describes different details depending partly on whether its 2026 fee rollout has reached a market. For markets in the rollout, it describes a fixed delivery fee that varies by merchant and a variable service fee influenced by factors such as distance and order size. Other possible charges include long-distance, small-order, weather-impact, regulatory-response, and optional express fees.

The same help page lists California, Chicago, Colorado, the District of Columbia, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York City, Puerto Rico, and Seattle as excluded from the rollout at its initial stage. For those listed markets, DoorDash says the service fee may vary but is 15% of subtotal for most orders and 5% for most eligible DashPass restaurant orders; a minimum fee may apply. DoorDash says taxes are estimated before checkout and finalized on the receipt. Because rollout status and local terms can change, check the app’s current breakdown for your address rather than treating this market list as permanent.

Uber eGift Card
  • This card is redeemable via the Uber app within the U.S. in cities where Uber is available.
  • Redemption: Mobile App
  • No returns and no refunds on gift cards.

In a July 23, 2026 announcement, DoorDash said its revised delivery fee is fixed by merchant and its service fee varies with factors including distance and order size. It also said more fee explanations and a fee tally would appear in the app. DoorDash reported that, under its model, over 70% of recent orders would have had the same or lower fees, with a median saving of $0.78. That is DoorDash’s analysis, not an independent finding or a forecast for an individual order.

Uber Eats fees are also order-specific

Uber’s consumer fee page says delivery fees can vary by merchant, location, demand, and nearby courier availability. Courier-delivered orders may also have a service fee that varies with factors including basket size. Depending on the order and location, possible additions include long-range, small-order, delivery-adjustment, marketplace, and priority-delivery fees; the page also lists a local operating fee for Seattle. Legally required charges or merchant fees, such as bag fees, may apply. Uber says checkout tax is an estimate that can differ from the final receipt. Not every fee applies to every basket, so use the breakdown displayed for your specific order.

Does free delivery mean an order has no fees?

No. A $0 delivery fee addresses only that fee; item prices, service fees, taxes, and other applicable charges can remain. A membership or promotion may also have eligibility rules.

Check whether a membership actually fits

DoorDash says DashPass provides $0 delivery fees and reduced service fees on eligible orders that meet the subtotal minimum shown in the app. Eligible merchants are identified there, and the discount does not mean every charge disappears. Check the merchant, minimum, exclusions, and remaining fees on the order itself using the DashPass terms.

DoorDash eGift Card
  • Get thousands of restaurants, convenience stores, pet stores, grocery stores, gifts, and more at your fingertips.
  • Easy ordering, order customizations, and real-time tracking
  • Pickup, group order, and scheduled delivery options available
  • No returns and no refunds on gift cards.

To decide whether a paid membership is worthwhile, compare its charge and any applicable tax with the delivery and service fees you would otherwise pay on the orders you expect to place. Base the calculation on your actual eligible restaurants and likely order frequency, not a claimed average saving. Terms and promotions can change, so check the current offer in the app.

How to judge dependability without a misleading ranking

Available evidence does not support ranking DoorDash, Uber Eats, or other services nationwide by on-time delivery, order accuracy, cancellations, or how well problems are resolved. Fee information does not measure delivery performance. A service’s estimated window and support options are useful checks, but they are not comparative proof of reliability.

  • Check whether the restaurant is accepting orders at the time you need it.
  • Compare the delivery window shown before you pay, allowing for it to be an estimate.
  • Look at the tracking and support information available in the app for that order.
  • Use your own experience with the same restaurant and address as a local data point, not proof that a platform performs better everywhere.

If timing matters, compare the restaurant’s own ordering channel as well. Whether direct ordering or delivery through an app is more dependable depends on the restaurant and order; the available evidence does not establish a universal answer.

What fee-disclosure rules mean for shoppers

Fee rules are not uniform across the United States. The Federal Trade Commission’s April 2026 announcement said several states had adopted clearer-disclosure requirements and described an agency inquiry into total prices, fee recipients and purpose, variable charges, item-price differences, promotions, and unauthorized billing. The announcement concerns a proposed-rule inquiry, not a final nationwide rule. It is not a substitute for checking the total shown for your order or for current official information about a particular state.
