Choose a foldable by judging it as two phones in one: the device you handle and type on while closed, and the larger workspace you use when it is open. Then compare construction and water-and-dust ratings, camera lenses and optical zoom, and the update commitment for that exact model. No single specification—including megapixels or an IP rating—settles whether a foldable will suit you or last.

Start with how you will use the phone folded and unfolded

The inner display is the reason to buy a foldable, but the cover display is the screen you encounter whenever the phone is closed. If you mostly message, browse, and make calls without opening the device, the cover screen’s size, shape, and typing comfort may matter more than the inner screen’s diagonal. If you read, edit, or multitask on your phone, prioritize the unfolded workspace and the apps you expect to use there.

For scale, Google lists an 8-inch inner display and a 6.4-inch cover display for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Samsung lists an 8-inch main screen for the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, and an 8-inch main screen and 6.5-inch cover display for the Galaxy Z Fold7. These are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee that differently shaped screens will feel equally spacious or comfortable. Try the closed-screen proportions and keyboard if possible, and consider weight and folded thickness alongside screen size. Assess durability beyond the IP rating

Ingress ratings describe protection against dust and water under the rating system’s test conditions; they do not measure hinge life, inner-screen wear, or the likelihood of long-term failure. Samsung lists IP48 for the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold7. Google lists IP68 for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold. IP48 and IP68 are distinct ratings, so do not read the higher numeral in one as a direct verdict on overall durability. Neither rating promises protection from every spill, exposure, impact, or type of dust.

Look at the rest of the construction details too: cover glass, frame materials, hinge design, and the terms of any warranty or repair coverage available in your region. Manufacturer specifications describe materials and ratings, but the cited product information does not establish comparative long-term failure rates. Treat durability as a set of factors rather than a single score. [Samsung US foldable comparison; Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold specifications; Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 specifications]

Compare camera systems by lens and reach, not megapixels alone

Megapixel counts describe image-sensor resolution, not the complete quality of a photo. Consider which lenses you will use—wide, ultrawide, and telephoto—and how much optical reach the telephoto camera provides. Optical zoom uses the telephoto lens; a stated maximum that goes beyond optical reach may use other processing and should not be treated as equivalent.

Check that the software fits your habits—and verify support for the exact model

A larger inner screen is most useful when the software supports the way you work. Samsung lists Flex mode, Multi window, Samsung DeX, App Continuity, and Taskbar options for the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra. Check whether the apps you rely on work well with those features; a multitasking tool is valuable only if it fits your routine. Samsung’s comparison also says the Fold8 Ultra does not support the S Pen, a relevant limitation if stylus input is essential to you. [Samsung US foldable comparison]

Update promises vary by model and should be checked against current terms in your market. Google states that the Pixel 10 Pro Fold receives seven years of OS, security, and Pixel Drop updates. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold7 technical sheet states seven years of OS and security updates; that is a Fold7 commitment, not evidence of the same duration for the Fold8 Ultra. The Samsung comparison cited for the Fold8 Ultra does not state its update duration. Confirm the commitment for the exact phone before purchase. Use a practical shortlist before buying

  1. Decide what the fold is for. If you mainly want a normal phone experience, focus on closed-screen shape and typing. If you will regularly read, edit, or multitask with the phone open, give more weight to the inner display and supporting software.
  2. Compare the physical trade-offs. Consider weight and folded thickness, then inspect construction details and the ingress rating without treating it as a measure of hinge endurance.
  3. Match cameras to your subjects. Compare the lens mix and optical telephoto reach, and seek independent camera testing if photo quality is a deciding factor.
  4. Confirm long-term ownership details. Check model-specific update terms, warranty and repair options, and local availability and price; these can vary by market and were not specified in the cited product pages.
