Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallChoose a focus app by the distraction you need it to address: tracking and limits, scheduled pauses, timed focus sessions, or stronger blocking across devices. Before paying, check that it works on your devices, understand what data it collects or syncs, and confirm that the features you need are included in the plan. If you only need basic timers or pauses, your phone’s built-in tools may be enough.
Start with the kind of distraction you want to reduce
Focus apps do different jobs. Identify the behavior you want to change before comparing brands; a usage report is not the same thing as a block that prevents you from opening an app.
- You want to understand your habits: Look for usage reports, reminders, and daily limits.
- You need recurring downtime: Look for schedules that pause selected apps or notifications at set times.
- You work in timed sessions: Check for one-off focus sessions, recurring sessions, and a timer that fits your routine.
- You switch between phone and computer: Look for app and website blocking on every device you use, and verify whether sessions or settings sync across them.
Also check how a tool handles exceptions: whether you can pause or bypass a session, take breaks, and keep essential apps or calls available. These are questions to test against your own needs, not features that can be assumed across all focus apps.
Check device coverage and feature parity
A platform appearing on an app’s compatibility list does not mean every feature works the same way on every device. Check the exact phone, computer, browser, and operating system you plan to use, then verify that the specific feature you care about is available there.

Apple Screen Time
Apple describes Screen Time visibility and app time allowances in its Screen Time guide. Compare those controls with the schedule or blocking behavior you need before choosing a separate app.
Review privacy and data handling
Assess the app itself rather than assuming it follows the same privacy practices as the platform it runs on. On Apple devices, App Store product pages display developer-reported Privacy Nutrition Labels; Apple explains what they mean in its privacy information. Treat a label as a screening aid, not a substitute for the app’s privacy policy.

Before installing or subscribing, check whether the app requires an account, what usage or account data it collects, whether data is stored locally or in the cloud, what is synced across devices, and how long information is retained. For example, Opal says its reports use data stored locally on each device and do not combine device usage into one report. That statement describes Opal’s reporting setup; it is not an independent privacy audit.

Quick Recap
Use a short checklist to make the final choice
- Name the problem: Decide whether you need insight, daily limits, scheduled pauses, timed sessions, or broader app and website blocking.
- Match your devices: Confirm the feature works on each phone, computer, and browser you rely on; check whether settings or reports sync as you expect.
- Test the routine: Look for schedules, breaks, exceptions, and a workable way to end or bypass a session if needed.
- Read the privacy details: Review the app-store label where available and the app’s own policy, especially data collection, storage, syncing, and retention.
- Check the actual plan: Confirm that the feature you want is included, then verify your regional price, renewal period, trial, and cancellation conditions.
- Try built-in controls first if they fit: Android Digital Wellbeing and Apple Screen Time may cover basic usage limits and pauses without another service.
