To make your first open-source contribution, choose a small, clearly defined issue that fits your interests and the project’s current needs. Read the repository’s contribution guide, check that the issue is still active, then follow the project’s setup, testing, and pull request instructions. A “good first issue” label can help you find work, but it is not a guarantee that the task is available or ready to take on.

How to find a project and a suitable first issue

Start with a project you care about and can understand well enough to navigate. Read its README and contribution documentation, then look at recent activity to see how the project is maintained and where work happens. GitHub’s Open Source Guide recommends reviewing project instructions and commit activity before contributing.

Search the project’s issue list for labels such as good first issue or help wanted. They can surface tasks maintainers have identified for outside contributors, but they do not establish that an issue is still available, unambiguous, or suitable for you. Read the discussion and any linked context before deciding. GitHub’s contribution guide also advises asking maintainers whether your proposed work fits the project’s goals when an issue lacks those labels.

Compare candidate issues

If several issues look plausible, compare them on the points that affect whether you can complete and verify the work:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Clarity: Can you explain the expected result in your own words?
  • Scope: Is the change narrow enough to finish without taking on unrelated work?
  • Fit: Does the task match your current skills and interest?
  • Status: Are there recent comments, an assignee, a linked pull request, or signs the issue has already been fixed?
  • Verification: Does the project explain how to set up the work and check the result?

A small documentation fix or a narrowly described bug can be a reasonable starting point when the outcome and verification steps are understandable. These are practical selection criteria, not formal GitHub rules. Issue ownership and status can change, so check the live discussion and ask maintainers if the situation is unclear.

What to check before editing files

Find the repository’s contribution guide, often linked from its README or saved in a file named CONTRIBUTING. Treat it as the authority for the project’s development setup, coding and formatting conventions, required tests, and pull request expectations. These details vary by repository; generic GitHub instructions cannot tell you which commands or conventions a specific project requires.

Before starting, confirm the issue’s scope and whether someone else is already working on it. If the issue is unlabeled or the intended change is uncertain, leave a concise comment describing your plan and ask whether it fits the maintainers’ priorities. GitHub specifically recommends checking with maintainers about unlabeled work before opening a pull request.

  1. Fork if needed. If you cannot create a branch in the original repository and the project permits the fork workflow, make a fork. GitHub explains this approach in its guide to working with forks.
  2. Clone and set up the project. Clone the repository or your fork, follow the contribution guide’s setup steps, and confirm which branch the project expects changes to target.
  3. Create a topic branch and make a focused change. Use a descriptive branch name, keep the change centered on the issue, and run the checks specified by the project. GitHub’s contribution guide recommends a topic branch and a clear commit message; the right test commands are repository-specific.
  4. Commit and push. Commit the change with a clear message, then push the branch to the location used by the project’s workflow.
  5. Open the pull request. Target the appropriate base branch. Explain the problem, what you changed, and how you checked it; link the issue when relevant. Follow any pull request template and disclose checks you could not complete or questions that remain.
  6. Follow up. Watch automated checks and respond to maintainer feedback. If changes are requested, update the branch and keep the discussion focused and courteous.

GitHub’s project contribution quickstart describes this general lifecycle, including opening a pull request and responding to feedback. A pull request is a proposal for review, not a promise that the change will be accepted or merged; maintainers and project policies determine what is accepted.
