The right choice depends on the exact CPU and motherboard, the case’s heat-transfer design and natural-convection path, component clearances, and whether your workload is intermittent or sustained.
Start with your CPU and real workload
Identify the exact processor and how it will be used. A system handling light or intermittent tasks has time between bursts for heat to dissipate; long, continuous high-load work is a more demanding fit for passive cooling.
Noctua’s guidance for its NH-P1 says passive cooling works best with mixed, non-continuous workloads that give the heatsink time to cool. That is guidance for the NH-P1 setup, not a guarantee for every processor or case.
Do not use CPU TDP as a universal pass/fail test. A cooler’s heat-handling capability depends on the processor, case, ambient temperature, and other components. Treat any power-support figure as specific to the manufacturer’s product and stated configuration, not as a general measure of passive-cooling performance.

Choose the cooling architecture
Case that transfers CPU heat to the chassis
Some fanless cases use a specified mounting system or thermal interface to transfer heat from the CPU to the enclosure. The board, mounting hardware, and contact surfaces must match the case maker’s instructions; a board that physically fits is not necessarily making the intended thermal contact.
For example, Akasa describes the Euler CMX as a fanless Mini-ITX case and separately notes that its included heatsink and thermal pads cool M.2 2280 SSDs. Those SSD-cooling parts do not, by themselves, establish compatibility with a particular CPU or motherboard. Check the case’s supported configurations and installation details.

CPU-mounted passive heatsink inside a case
A CPU-mounted passive cooler relies on its own heatsink and the enclosure’s airflow path. The Noctua NH-P1 has six heatpipes and widely spaced fins. Noctua says it needs a case with good natural convection for full performance; an open bench or fans are alternatives when the intended passive setup is not suitable.
A metal enclosure is not automatically a passive CPU cooler. Confirm that the chosen case and heatsink are designed to work together, and follow each manufacturer’s setup requirements.

Verify fit and compatibility before buying
Check the exact motherboard and component combination against the case and cooler documentation. Compatibility lists apply to specific products, so do not infer that a case or heatsink supports a component merely because its dimensions appear close.
- Motherboard: Confirm the board form factor and exact CPU socket are supported.
- Mounting and thermal contact: Check the required brackets, fasteners, thermal pads, and contact surfaces. For a case that carries CPU heat into its chassis, confirm that the supported board and mounting system establish the intended thermal path.
- Clearances: Check cooler height and orientation, RAM clearance, expansion-card space, and power-supply format. Noctua’s NH-P1 case-compatibility list identifies cases with sufficient clearance for that cooler.
- Case-specific requirements: Follow the manufacturer’s supported-board list and installation instructions, including any required orientation or mounting hardware.
- CPU support: Check the case maker’s stated processor and power support for the exact configuration, rather than assuming a rating applies to every socket or board.
Akasa’s compact-cooling guide also advises checking socket compatibility, CPU power support, and case cooler-height clearance. These are useful checks, but the relevant compatibility list must match the specific model you are considering.

Check convection and heat beyond the CPU
Passive cooling depends on heat moving away from the heatsink or chassis through natural convection. Check the intended case orientation, whether fins or heat-dissipating surfaces are exposed, and whether a shelf, wall, or other obstruction could block the designed path. Noctua specifically calls for good natural convection for full NH-P1 performance.
Also consider the motherboard voltage regulator modules (VRMs), storage, and power components. Noctua warns that without airflow from a CPU cooler, a motherboard with weakly cooled VRMs can overheat and throttle even if the CPU temperature looks reasonable. A CPU temperature alone therefore does not tell you whether the whole system is operating safely.

Compare the options on matching criteria
Manufacturer figures are not necessarily comparable test results: vendors may specify different products and configurations, and the figures here do not share a stated test method. Compare each candidate against the same practical criteria instead.

Examples of manufacturer-stated support
The following figures describe specific products and configurations; they are not general limits for fanless PCs and do not establish comparable thermal performance.
- Akasa Euler CMX: In its February 20, 2026 announcement, Akasa lists processor support up to 35 W TDP for specified compatible Mini-ITX and socket configurations. Check the full compatibility details for your board and CPU.
- Akasa Euler TX3: In its December 12, 2025 announcement, Akasa lists processor support up to 35 W TDP for specified Thin Mini-ITX and socket configurations. Its spring mounting system is part of this product’s design.
- Noctua NH-P1: Noctua describes a CPU-mounted passive cooler with six heatpipes and widely spaced fins. Its full performance depends on good natural convection or alternatives such as an open bench or fans, and compatibility depends on the complete build.
