Choose the EDF system around the jet airframe, not around a fan diameter, motor KV, or thrust figure in isolation. First confirm the model’s approved fan fit and ready-to-fly limits, define what “fast” means for your flying, then match the fan, motor, battery, ESC, cooling, and ducting as one system. Finally, measure the installed setup and keep it within the manufacturers’ limits.

Start with the airframe, not the fan size

The airframe sets the practical limits: fan diameter and housing dimensions, intake and exhaust paths, battery space, allowable mass, center of gravity (CG), cooling, and launch and landing requirements. Check the aircraft manufacturer’s manual or approved power-system recommendations before comparing EDFs. Most jets are designed around a particular fan size, so a generic diameter-to-weight chart is only a preliminary screening aid, not a fit recommendation. The E-flite F-16 ARF Assembly Manual, for example, describes particular 65 mm configurations for that model; those parts are not universal guidance for other 65 mm jets.

Check physical fit and aircraft limits

  • Confirm the fan diameter, housing length, mounting points, and motor clearance against the airframe documentation.
  • Check that the inlet and exhaust paths are unobstructed and compatible with the fan and duct arrangement.
  • Compare the complete ready-to-fly mass, including battery, with the model’s limits and CG guidance.
  • Account for how the aircraft is launched and landed; the best power system on paper may not suit the model’s operating constraints.

Define what “fast” means for your flight

Decide whether you want higher level-flight top speed, stronger acceleration, better vertical performance, or a balanced sport setup. These goals can favor different trade-offs. A sleek, low-drag airframe is important for speed, but no single fan statistic predicts the speed of the complete aircraft. Airframe drag, mass, intake and exhaust design, available electrical power, and structural limits all matter. A larger fan is not automatically faster.

Compare complete fan-and-motor combinations

Use manufacturer recommendations or test data for the exact fan, motor, rotor configuration, and battery cell count under consideration. Do not select a motor by KV alone: KV describes the motor’s approximate unloaded revolutions per minute per volt, not its power or the aircraft’s speed. Fan type and blade configuration, voltage, and load affect which KV is suitable.

Verify mechanical and electrical compatibility

  • Match the motor to the fan’s specified diameter, length, shaft, and mounting arrangement.
  • Check the required rotation direction and confirm the fan and motor are intended to operate together.
  • Compare published cell-count, current, and power figures only when the tested configuration and conditions match your proposed setup.
  • Do not assume a measurement from one fan, motor, or bench supply applies to another system.

For scale, JP Hobby’s manufacturer listing for its specified 120 mm, 15S assembly reports 9.9 kg of thrust, 123 A, and 7,749 W at 63 V using a stabilized power supply. It lists a 150 A HV ESC for that product and warns that operation outside specifications can damage the motor, battery, or ESC. These are figures for that stated assembly and bench condition—not a sizing rule for other EDFs. See JP Hobby’s 120 mm EDF listing.

Match the battery, ESC, and cooling to the installed system

Confirm that the ESC supports the battery’s cell count and voltage, and that its continuous-current rating is appropriate for the measured system draw. Check the motor and battery limits as well; an ESC rating alone does not make a combination safe. Use an appropriate watt meter or power meter to measure current and power in the actual installed configuration, and keep operation within the component manufacturers’ published limits.

Voltage, current, mass, and runtime interact. For comparable power, a correctly matched higher-voltage setup can draw less current, but a higher-cell battery may add mass. A larger-capacity pack can extend runtime while also increasing weight and changing CG. Higher power can increase component load and thermal demands, so provide the cooling the airframe and component makers require.

Why model-specific recommendations matter

The E-flite F-16 manual gives two examples for that aircraft: a sport configuration with a 65 mm EDF, 40 A ESC, and 2100 mAh 3S 11.1 V battery, and a high-power configuration with a 65 mm EDF, 60 A ESC, and 2600 mAh 3S 11.1 V battery. The manual notes shorter flight time for the high-power setup and calls for throttle management because of the higher component load and limited cooling. These are dated, model-specific configurations, not current universal recommendations.

Treat the thrust tube as a trade-off to validate

The thrust-tube exit area affects the balance between static thrust and exhaust velocity. A smaller exit area may favor exhaust velocity, while a larger area may favor thrust; the result depends on the fan and airframe installation. One secondary guide uses fan swept area—the case area minus the hub area—as a reference for discussing the exit. Its ratio and tube-length suggestions are heuristics, not universal specifications. Follow the aircraft and fan manufacturers’ guidance, and validate any duct change on the complete model rather than choosing a nozzle diameter solely because the goal is speed. See Radio Control Info’s EDF setup guide.

Compare viable setups on the same terms

If more than one system fits the aircraft, compare each complete configuration rather than isolated headline numbers.

Commission the system safely

  1. Inspect and secure the fan. Follow the manufacturer’s mounting and balancing instructions, check fan rotation, and confirm the intake is clear.
  2. Protect the intake area. Keep hands, clothing, and loose objects away; the fan can draw objects into the intake.
  3. Check battery handling guidance. Follow the LiPo maker’s instructions. The E-flite manual warns: “Mishandling of LiPo batteries can result in fire.”
  4. Measure before flight. With the model secured and using an appropriate meter, verify current and power in the installed configuration against the limits for the fan, motor, ESC, and battery.
  5. Manage heat and throttle. Respect the airframe’s cooling limits and component ratings, and avoid assuming a bench measurement guarantees the same result in every installation.
