Include the base, stand, and every overhanging detail, then compare ready-made, modular, and custom cases against the display space and access you need.
Measure the finished diorama
Record the widest, tallest, and deepest points of the completed display, including the base or stand that will stay inside the case, fragile details, and any protrusions. Packaging dimensions do not tell you whether the assembled model will fit.
Compare those measurements with the case’s internal usable dimensions. Leave enough clearance to lower the model into the case and remove it without catching delicate pieces. Also measure the case’s external footprint against the shelf, cabinet, or wall location where it will go.
Dimension conventions vary by maker. A listed figure may refer to internal or external dimensions, and some custom suppliers use their own sizing formulas. Check the selected product’s instructions and ask the maker to clarify what its quoted measurements mean before ordering. Choose a case format that fits the build
Ready-made LEGO case
LEGO’s US listing for the Play and Display Case – Blue 5006157 gives dimensions of over 19 cm high, 39 cm wide, and 14 cm deep, and describes a two-level case with six baseplates. Use those dimensions as a fit check for that product, not as evidence that it will accommodate every diorama. Check the official LEGO listing for the current product details.
Modular case
A modular case may be useful when the display needs a larger enclosure or a stackable arrangement. KGBOX describes its Showcase-Pro size for wider vehicles, architecture models, dioramas, and larger builds. Confirm the exact size and configuration against both the model and the intended location; “modular” alone does not guarantee a fit. See KGBOX’s modular display cases.

Custom case
A made-to-measure case is worth considering for an unusual footprint, height, or arrangement that does not fit a ready-made option. Puffin Plastics offers bespoke acrylic cases for LEGO builds, including dioramas, and describes them as UV-protected. Flying Box provides its own extra-space guidance and dimension calculation. Use the selected maker’s convention rather than assuming one supplier’s formula applies to another. - Usable interior: Confirm the internal width, height, and depth, including any restrictions from the case’s base or supports.
- Clearance: Allow room around projecting or delicate pieces and enough space to place and remove the model.
- External footprint: Make sure the assembled case fits the shelf or display area, not just the model inside it.
- Access: Check how the case opens or comes apart and whether you can reach the diorama without disturbing it.
- Mounting and base: Confirm whether the case is intended to sit on a shelf or mount on a wall, and how the diorama will rest on its base.
- Material and protection: Verify the material and any UV-protection specification on the particular product page. Treat protection statements as claims for that product, not as a guarantee shared by all cases.
- Order terms: For a bespoke case, check production lead time, delivery details, and return conditions before placing the order.
What to know about acrylic and UV claims
Acrylic is one documented material choice for custom LEGO cases. Puffin Plastics describes its cases as UV-protected and offers several thicknesses; those are maker-specific product claims. The available product information does not establish a universal performance ranking of acrylic versus glass for scratch resistance, clarity, weight, or long-term protection. Compare the specifications of the exact cases you are considering rather than assuming one material is always better.
