What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Choose a data modeling tool by matching it to the work: designing a conceptual, logical, or physical model; inspecting an existing database; or documenting SQL analytics transformations. Those are different jobs, and no single option here is established as the best for every small team. Start with the workflow, then compare database support, collaboration, portability, privacy, and cost at the number of people who will actually edit models.
Identify the modeling job before comparing tools
“Data modeling” can describe several workflows. A diagram editor for designing a schema is not necessarily a live-database explorer, and neither is the same thing as a platform for building and documenting analytics transformations.
- Conceptual, logical, or physical design: Create or refine a model, from a high-level view of entities and relationships to a database-specific design. SqlDBM describes support spanning these modeling levels. SqlDBM’s features.
- Inspecting an existing database: Explore tables and relationships in a database client. DBeaver describes ER diagrams as a way to explore database structure. DBeaver’s ER diagram documentation.
- Analytics transformation and lineage: Build SQL-based data transformations and document project resources and dependencies. dbt Catalog describes project resources and lineage; it is not simply an ERD drawing tool. dbt’s project exploration documentation.
Write down the output your team needs: a reviewed schema design, a diagram of a live database, or documented transformation logic and lineage. If you need more than one, evaluate tools against each job rather than treating their feature lists as interchangeable.
Compare the candidates by fit, not by a universal ranking
The official product pages describe different intended uses; they do not establish an independent performance ranking. Use the table to narrow the shortlist, then verify the questions in the last column for your database and workflow.

| dbdiagram.io | Text-authored ER diagrams using DBML, schema import and export, and shareable documentation. The current pricing page lists a free, single-user plan with up to 10 diagrams; collaboration depends on plan. Pricing and product overview. | Whether DBML and supported SQL dialects suit the team; how many people need editing access; whether the plan’s privacy and sharing controls meet requirements. |
| DBeaver | Database-client exploration of structure through ER diagrams. Its edition page currently displays Lite at $113/year or $12/month and Enterprise at $255/year or $26/month. Editions and pricing and ER diagrams. | Whether the database and needed development features are supported; whether live-schema exploration is enough, or you need a persistent model authored and reviewed collaboratively. |
| dbt | SQL analytics transformation and project documentation/lineage. The current pricing page lists Developer as free and Starter at $100 per user/month; it says dbt Core suits small, highly technical teams with simpler deployments. Pricing and project exploration. | Whether the requirement is analytics engineering and lineage rather than ER diagrams; how the existing SQL, deployment, and team workflow would fit. |
| SqlDBM | Conceptual, logical, and physical modeling, concurrent work, versioning, integrations, and documentation. Its pricing page says custom pricing and asks teams to contact sales for a quote. Features and pricing. | Whether the modeling breadth and governance justify a sales-led evaluation; which integrations and storage or security options are required. |

Check the practical requirements that change the decision
Database and dialect compatibility
Confirm that a candidate supports the database engines and SQL dialects you use—not just a broadly similar database. Verify import and export behavior with representative tables, types, constraints, and relationships. A successful connection or diagram is not proof that every schema detail will round-trip correctly.

- Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
- Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
- Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Forward engineering, reverse engineering, and deployment
Decide whether the team needs to generate SQL from a designed model, import an existing schema, explore a live database, or combine these approaches. Test reverse engineering against a representative schema rather than assuming every diagram editor handles it equally. Then map the route from a model change to production: who reviews the generated or edited SQL, how migrations are managed, and what safeguards prevent an unreviewed change from reaching the database.
Portability and code review
Check what the team can retain and review outside the tool. dbdiagram.io uses DBML and lists SQL and diagram exports; SqlDBM lists version control and Git integration. dbdiagram.io product overview and SqlDBM features. Confirm supported formats, dialect coverage, and whether exported files fit the team’s existing review and release process.

Collaboration, access, and privacy
Count the people who need to edit—not just view—and check editor limits and plan-dependent sharing. Also assess how diagrams can be shared, what controls exist for access, and whether the storage or deployment model is acceptable for your data architecture. Annotation and diagram views matter too: reviewers should be able to understand assumptions and discuss changes without losing context.
Learning curve and total cost
Consider who will use the tool: data architects, application developers, analysts, or a mix. A text-based workflow may fit engineers comfortable with DBML or SQL; a visual model may be easier for colleagues who need to review relationships without editing code. Compare the cost for the actual number of editors and any required plan features, not just the lowest advertised entry price. SqlDBM’s pricing is quote-based, so request a quote if it remains on the shortlist.

Run a small, realistic evaluation
- Choose a representative schema. Include realistic table counts, relationships, naming conventions, data types, and constraints. Avoid using sensitive production data unless the tool’s security and data-handling arrangements have been approved.
- Test the exact modeling operation. Import or reverse-engineer the schema if that is required; otherwise create a small model and generate or export the SQL your team expects to use.
- Run a review with the real team. Have the intended editors make a change and have other stakeholders review it. Check access controls, comments or annotations, diagram readability, and whether plan limits obstruct the workflow.
- Follow the change to its destination. Put the exported model or SQL through the team’s normal version-control, review, and deployment process. Note any manual conversion or steps that are hard to repeat.
- Compare finalists against the same checklist. Score required database support, modeling scope, import/export, editor access, privacy, usability for the intended users, and total cost at team size. Prefer a tool that passes must-have requirements over one with a longer feature list.
This evaluation is more useful than choosing from screenshots or feature claims alone. The vendor pages describe capabilities and plans, but do not establish comparative ease of use, performance, or a winner across small teams.
Make the shortlist reflect your team’s workflow
For text-authored ERDs and shareable schema documentation, start by checking whether dbdiagram.io’s DBML workflow and the right collaboration plan fit. For inspecting a connected database, evaluate DBeaver with the team’s engine and required edition. For analytics SQL transformations and lineage, assess dbt rather than treating it as a general-purpose ERD editor. For broad conceptual-to-physical modeling with concurrent work and governance, ask SqlDBM for pricing and confirm the needed integrations.
