Choose an exchange by checking that it serves your country, supports the exact assets and networks you need, lets you withdraw, and clearly explains custody, failure handling, security, and fees. Choose a wallet by deciding who controls its private keys: an exchange account or custodial wallet puts access in a provider’s hands, while a self-custody wallet gives you control—and responsibility for protecting the keys and recovery phrase.
There is no universally best exchange or wallet without knowing your location, intended assets, transaction habits, and comfort with managing recovery. Use the checks below to compare options before depositing or transferring funds.
Start with the custody decision
An exchange account and a self-custody wallet differ primarily in who controls the private keys. In a custodial account, the provider manages those keys. In self-custody, you control them directly. A recovery phrase—also called a seed phrase—is a strong sign that you are responsible for restoring access to a self-custody wallet.
Custody and connectivity are separate choices. “Hot” describes a wallet connected to the internet; “cold” generally describes offline storage, often on a physical device. Either kind can involve self-custody or a third-party provider. The SEC explains that online access can be convenient but exposes a hot wallet to cyber risks, while a physical device can be lost, damaged, or stolen (SEC investor bulletin, Dec. 12, 2025).

| Arrangement | Who controls the keys? | Main convenience | Main responsibility or risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exchange account or custodial wallet | The provider | Account support may help with access recovery, subject to the provider’s terms. | You depend on the provider’s security, operating status, and withdrawal arrangements. |
| Self-custody hot wallet | You | Internet-connected access can make frequent transactions convenient. | You must secure the keys and recovery phrase; internet exposure can increase cyber risk. |
| Self-custody cold wallet | You | Offline storage reduces exposure to internet-connected attacks. | You must protect the device and its recovery information; the device can be lost, damaged, or stolen. |
No custody method eliminates risk. With self-custody, losing or exposing the keys or recovery phrase can mean losing access. With a third-party custodian, hacking, shutdown, or bankruptcy can put access or recovery at risk.
How to compare cryptocurrency exchanges
Before opening an account or sending money, verify the practical details—not just the app’s appearance or the length of its asset list. The SEC recommends investigating a custodian’s background, regulation, supported assets, failure response, storage practices, and fees (SEC investor bulletin, Dec. 12, 2025).
Confirm local availability and asset support
- Check that the service is available where you live; access and rules vary by jurisdiction.
- Look up the exact asset you want to buy, sell, or hold.
- If you plan to transfer an asset, confirm that the exchange supports the specific network you intend to use. An asset name alone does not establish that two services support the same network.
Check withdrawals and what happens when something goes wrong
- Confirm that you can withdraw the assets you plan to hold to a compatible wallet, and review any limits, delays, or restrictions in the service’s terms.
- Find out what the provider says happens during an outage, account freeze, shutdown, or insolvency—and whether customer assets are segregated or otherwise safeguarded.
- Understand the account-recovery process for a lost password and what support can and cannot do. Account recovery is not the same as a guarantee that funds can be recovered after provider failure.
Compare the full fee picture and security controls
Check account, trading, deposit, withdrawal, and transfer charges. Review available account protections, such as multifactor authentication, and the provider’s stated custody and storage practices. A low trading fee or a prominent security feature alone does not tell you how the service handles every risk.

Research the company and its terms
Read the provider’s custody, withdrawal, insurance, and failure terms rather than assuming that “insured” means every crypto balance is protected. The FTC recommends looking up a company with terms such as “review,” “scam,” or “complaint” (FTC consumer guidance). The CFTC cautions that many virtual-currency cash markets may not be regulated or supervised by a government agency and may lack important system safeguards or customer protections; its warning is not a current assessment of every exchange in every jurisdiction (CFTC customer advisory).

First decide whether you want a provider to manage the keys or want to manage them yourself. If you choose self-custody, then compare wallet support, recovery, connectivity, usability, and cost. Do not transfer a meaningful amount until you understand how the wallet’s recovery process works.
Check asset and network compatibility
Verify that the wallet supports the exact asset and network you plan to use, and that the sending service supports the same network for withdrawals. Sending to an incompatible address or network can make funds difficult or impossible to recover; never rely on a matching token name alone.

Understand recovery before setup
For self-custody, learn how the wallet creates and restores access, and how it expects you to protect the recovery phrase. Anyone who obtains that phrase may be able to control the wallet. The SEC staff’s Dec. 12, 2025 bulletin states: “Never share your private keys, or seed phrases.” The bulletin represents investor-education staff views, not a binding rule or regulation (SEC investor bulletin).
Choose hot or cold based on how you use it
A hot wallet may suit someone who values convenient access for frequent transactions and is prepared to secure an internet-connected device. A cold wallet may suit someone seeking offline storage and willing to manage the physical device and its backup. Cold storage is not a guarantee: losing or exposing the recovery phrase can still put funds at risk, and a device can be lost, damaged, or stolen (SEC investor bulletin, Dec. 12, 2025).
Include the real cost
A wallet app may be free to install while transactions still carry fees. Physical cold-wallet devices typically cost money. Compare the cost with your needs, but do not treat a price or device purchase as proof of security.

Should you leave crypto on an exchange or move it to a wallet?
There is no risk-free answer. Keeping assets with a custodian means relying on its systems and terms; moving them to self-custody means taking responsibility for keys, recovery, and transfers. Your choice depends on how often you transact, whether you need direct control, and whether you can safely manage recovery.
Before transferring, verify the destination address and network, understand the wallet’s recovery process, and check the exchange’s withdrawal terms and fees. A mistaken transfer, lost credentials, compromise, or provider failure may leave you unable to recover funds, according to the FTC (FTC consumer guidance).
Protect the account or wallet you choose
- Use a strong, unique password and multifactor authentication for online crypto accounts.
- Never share private keys or a seed phrase, and be alert to phishing messages and websites.
- Keep recovery information private and protected from loss, theft, and unauthorized access.
- Check transaction details carefully, including the destination address and network, before confirming a transfer.
These safeguards follow SEC investor guidance (SEC investor bulletin, Dec. 12, 2025). Crypto held in accounts is not government-insured like U.S. dollars in an FDIC-insured bank account, the FTC warns (FTC consumer guidance). Blockchain transactions are typically recorded on public ledgers and may reveal amounts and wallet addresses; a pseudonymous address does not guarantee anonymity (FTC consumer guidance).
