Choose a wallet by deciding who will control the keys, how you will recover access, and whether the exact wallet, device, and network support your Bitcoin, XRP, and SHIB. A custodial service may be easier to recover, while a non-custodial software or hardware wallet gives you responsibility for the keys. A multi-asset hardware wallet is one option to consider for offline key storage, but verify current compatibility before buying or transferring. If you create your own XRP Ledger account, account reserves apply; a custodian may avoid that individual-account requirement but adds reliance on the provider.
Can one wallet hold Bitcoin, XRP, and SHIB?
Yes, a multi-asset wallet may support all three, but “supports SHIB” is not enough to establish that your particular SHIB token and network are supported. Confirm compatibility for the asset, network, device model, and wallet software together. Support can vary by model or require a compatible third-party wallet instead of the manufacturer’s companion app.
For example, Ledger’s supported-asset listings include XRP and SHIBA INU (SHIB), and Ledger notes that some assets may require compatible third-party wallet software. Those listings do not establish that every Ledger model, app, or SHIB network representation is supported. Check the current manufacturer information for the precise token and network you hold before sending funds.
Choose who controls the keys
A crypto wallet manages keys and authorizes access to assets recorded on a blockchain. The main choice is whether a provider controls the keys for you or you take responsibility for them yourself.
#1 Best Overall
- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
| Wallet type | Key control and recovery | Practical tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Custodial wallet | A third party holds the keys. The provider may offer password recovery, but access and withdrawals depend on its service and policies. | Can simplify account recovery and may avoid the individual XRP Ledger account reserve requirement. You rely on the provider to maintain access to the assets. |
| Non-custodial software wallet | You control the keys and recovery information. | Convenient access from a phone or computer, but the keys are managed on an internet-capable device. You must protect the device and backup. |
| Hardware wallet | You control keys held on a physical device. | Can keep keys more isolated when disconnected, but requires operating and protecting a device. Confirm model, software, and network support for every asset. |
No category is best for everyone. The XRP Ledger wallet guide describes the tradeoff between a custodian’s recovery convenience and the greater responsibility of controlling your own keys.
Compare convenience with key isolation
Custodial wallet
A custodial service can be simpler if you prefer provider-assisted account recovery and do not want to manage a recovery phrase. In exchange, you depend on the provider for account access and withdrawals. The provider’s account setup may also differ from holding assets in an individual on-ledger account.

Software wallet
A non-custodial software wallet gives you control of the keys while making routine access convenient on a phone or computer. Because the keys are handled on an internet-capable device, device security and backup handling are part of your responsibility.
Hardware wallet
A hardware wallet can isolate keys from an internet-connected phone or computer when used offline. That isolation can reduce some online exposure, but it does not prevent every loss, mistake, or compromise. You still need to protect the device, verify transaction details, and secure recovery information. If you are considering a multi-asset hardware wallet, verify that its current model and software support Bitcoin, XRP, and your specific SHIB network before buying or transferring.

Check XRP Ledger account reserves
On the XRP Ledger, an account reserve is a protocol requirement, not a wallet vendor’s fee. The official documentation currently lists a 1 XRP base reserve for a self-custodied mainnet account and an additional 0.2 XRP owner reserve for each owned ledger item in the general case. Reserve settings can change through fee voting, so check the current XRP Ledger reserve documentation before creating or funding an account.
A custodial wallet may use an account managed by the provider rather than giving each customer an individual XRP Ledger account. In that arrangement, the customer’s individual-account reserve requirement does not apply; confirm how the provider handles XRP custody and withdrawals.

Back up a self-custody wallet safely
For many modern deterministic wallets, the recovery phrase is enough to restore the wallet. Anyone who obtains that phrase may be able to access the corresponding funds, so treat it as a secret with the same care as the assets it protects. Follow the selected wallet’s official setup and recovery instructions.
- Keep recovery information in secure physical locations; Bitcoin.org recommends keeping backups in more than one location.
- Never share a recovery phrase with someone claiming to be support, and never enter it into a website in response to an unsolicited request.
- Make sure you understand how recovery works before moving funds into a self-custody wallet.
Bitcoin.org warns that losing recovery information can mean permanently losing access. A physical backup can help with recovery, but it also needs secure handling.

Remember that self-custody is not anonymity
Self-custody determines who controls the keys; it does not make transactions private. Bitcoin transaction data is public and permanent, as explained in Bitcoin.org’s privacy guidance. Do not choose a wallet on the assumption that controlling the keys hides your activity.
Quick Recap
Use this checklist before choosing or transferring
- Decide who should control the keys. Choose a custodian if provider-managed recovery matters more to you, or a non-custodial wallet if you are prepared to manage keys and recovery yourself.
- Match the wallet to your routine. Consider whether frequent phone access or greater offline isolation better suits how you plan to use the assets.
- Verify support for each asset and network. Check Bitcoin and XRP support and confirm the exact SHIB network and token representation for the specific device and wallet software.
- Check XRP account setup. If you will create an individual XRP Ledger account, review the current reserve rules and account requirements.
- Understand recovery before funding. Read the wallet maker’s official setup and recovery documentation, then secure the recovery information before relying on the wallet.
- Recheck compatibility before sending. Support and protocol settings can change; confirm current details at the wallet provider and relevant network documentation before a purchase or transfer.
