For native graphics, the 8×8 character grid and PETSCII mapping matter; for desktop work, file format, glyph coverage, lowercase style, and license are the practical decision points.
Start with the kind of C64 font you need
- Native C64 graphics or emulation: use a character set that matches the machine, language variant, and display mode you are targeting.
- Pixel art, mockups, or a game made on a desktop: choose a TTF or OTF when you need ordinary design-app support, and check that its glyph mapping includes the symbols you plan to use.
- Print or static artwork: choose based on both appearance and explicit permission for the intended output; then inspect a proof at its final size.
These categories are not interchangeable. A desktop font can include more Unicode characters than a native C64 set, and a character set intended for the machine may not behave like a conventional desktop font.
What the C64 character grid means for design
In high-resolution character mode, each C64 character occupies an 8×8-pixel cell and is encoded as eight bytes. A full set of 256 characters therefore occupies 2 kB. In multicolor character mode, each pair of adjacent bits represents one double-width pixel, producing four horizontal pixel positions across the same eight rows. The changed geometry affects stroke width, counters, and spacing; a glyph that looks balanced in high-resolution mode may look quite different in multicolor mode. C64-Wiki’s character-set reference describes these formats.
For an authentic result, also match the character-set variant and mapping. The default set is identified with MOS 901225-01, and documented language variants include Swedish/Finnish sets with å, ä, and ö. Check that the exact accented characters and symbols your project requires are present in the selected set. The C64 character-ROM repository lists the default and language-specific sets.

Options for desktop pixel art and games
| Option | What it offers | Check before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| zeiche C64 TTF/OTF | Desktop font files with Basic Latin, PETSCII graphics mapped to Symbols for Legacy Computing, box-drawing and block-element glyphs, and reverse-video glyphs in a Private Use Area. The repository declares CC0 1.0. | Confirm the downloaded file’s mapping and license version, and test the symbols in the application you use. Repository and files |
| Pet Me 64 | A TrueType font described as containing a complete C64 character set in a Private Use Area, plus additional Unicode support. Its page says a release dated October 22, 2019 added support for Symbols for Legacy Computing, introduced in Unicode 13.0. | Check the Private Use Area mapping in your software; a visually similar Unicode character is not necessarily the same as a native PETSCII code. Pet Me 64 details |
| Void C64 / C64TwoPx | A paid digital TrueType display font described as having Atari lowercase characters for game mockups and graphic design, with a two-pixel variant. | The listing states that free and personal projects or games may use it, while commercial projects require payment at the suggested price. It showed a $5 minimum purchase price when accessed in 2026; recheck the current price and terms. Current listing |
| Style64 C64 TrueType package | A package whose license permits static images and vector art under stated conditions, with some specified web and free-software uses. | Read the package’s own license before embedding, redistributing, or using it commercially; it restricts selling the font, placing it in a font collection, and serving it directly from a website. Test the glyphs your project actually uses
For a game interface or mockup, compare the fonts using the real strings that will appear on screen. Inspect upper- and lowercase letters, numerals, punctuation, accented characters, and any platform-specific symbols at the intended display size. Font listings describe differences in lowercase style and glyph coverage, but they do not establish which option is most legible in every game or application.
TTF or OTF files fit ordinary desktop design workflows. Native character-set files serve a different purpose: they provide the character data used by a C64 or emulator, not necessarily a desktop font with the same typing and layout behavior.

Choosing a character set for a C64 or emulator
Match the set and graphics mode
Begin with the standard character-set form and language variant required by the target. Then preview important glyphs in the actual graphics mode and palette. In high-resolution mode, examine the full 8×8 pixel grid; in multicolor mode, account for the four double-width horizontal positions. Check any non-English letters and graphics symbols in context, rather than assuming that a similarly named desktop font uses the same character codes.
Account for the custom-set tradeoff
A custom character set changes which characters are available in that configuration. The Commodore 64 Programmer’s Reference Manual, in its “Programming Graphics” section, explains: “Generally, if you use your own character set by telling the VIC-II chip to get the character information from the area you have prepared in RAM, the standard Commodore 64 characters are unavailable to you.” The manual’s cited copy is a rehosted PDF. Selecting a character ROM in VICE
The character-ROM repository documents this VICE path: Preferences → Settings → Machine → ROM → Chargen. Select the desired character ROM there; save the settings if you need the choice to persist. The repository’s VICE guidance and character sets describe the procedure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Licensing for print, artwork, and distribution
Do not infer redistribution or commercial-game permission from a free download. The options above use different licensing approaches: zeiche’s repository declares CC0 1.0 Universal; Style64 lists specific permissions and restrictions; Void’s listing gives terms for personal/free and commercial projects. These terms apply to their respective fonts, not to C64-style fonts generally. Read the license or listing attached to the exact file you download, especially before embedding a font in a game or sharing it with other people.
For print, static images, or vector artwork, verify that the license expressly covers the planned output. Proof the design at its final physical scale and look for thin or lost strokes, closed counters, punctuation problems, clipped glyphs, and substituted symbols. The available sources do not establish a controlled print-legibility comparison among these options, so a proof is more useful than assuming one font is universally best.
