For recursive working-tree searches, ripgrep is a strong starting point because it respects ignore rules by default. For searches centered on Git repository content and pathspecs, use git grep. Then verify that the tool’s file filters and regex engine match your needs, and compare speed using equivalent search scopes.
Start with what you need to search
Search tools can return different results because they search different sets of files. Before comparing commands, identify whether you need to search the working tree, Git-tracked or indexed content, or explicit paths. A tool that skips ignored files may appear faster than one that includes them, while answering a different question.
Choose ripgrep for recursive working-tree searches
ripgrep recursively searches directories and, by default, respects ignore rules and skips hidden and binary files. These defaults are useful when searching a project without traversing generated output or other excluded paths. They also mean that a search can omit a file you expected to find. Consult the ripgrep User Guide for controls over hidden and ignored files, filtering, and other search behavior.
Choose git grep for repository-aware searches
git grep is designed for searching within a Git repository. Its documented modes and pathspecs let you shape a search around repository content and selected paths. If your task depends on whether a file is tracked, staged, or otherwise included in a particular repository mode, check the Git git-grep documentation and select the mode that matches the question you are asking.

Use explicit paths when the search boundary is the point
If neither a recursive working-tree search nor a repository-wide search describes your task, specify the paths to search. This makes the boundary visible and easier to reproduce. Keep the scope the same when comparing tools or interpreting results.
Check ignore, hidden-file, binary-file, and symlink behavior
File-selection defaults are part of a search tool’s answer, not just a performance detail. Before relying on a result, ask which files the command included and excluded. In ripgrep, ignore rules, hidden files, and binary-file handling affect the default search scope; its guide documents ways to override filters. For Git searches, use the repository modes and pathspec behavior described in the Git documentation.

- Need to include a hidden or ignored file? Check how to override ripgrep’s default filtering.
- Need to search only repository content or a selected subset? Choose the appropriate
git grepmode and pathspec. - Need consistent results across tools? Match their file scope and filtering before comparing output or speed.
Match the regex engine to the patterns you use
Do not assume that every grep-like command accepts the same regular-expression constructs. ripgrep’s default regex engine does not support some features, including look-around and backreferences. Its documented PCRE2 mode supports those constructs. If your patterns depend on them, confirm the engine and mode before adopting a tool or putting a search into a script. Consider output, scripting, and platform fit
A suitable tool must work in the environments where you and your team will run it. Check its current official documentation for installation and platform support, then try representative searches in the shells, scripts, editors, or automation that matter to your workflow. Confirm how the command presents matches and handles exit status before depending on that behavior in scripts; the cited materials do not establish a complete, current comparison of these details across all candidate tools.

Benchmark the search you actually perform
There is no universal fastest choice established by the available evidence. Search time depends on the pattern, corpus, filtering, and environment. The ripgrep FAQ discusses performance considerations, and the project’s benchmark page reports results for specified patterns and datasets. Treat those results as project-published measurements for their stated workloads, not as a general ranking.
- Choose a representative repository or file set and use the same pattern for every candidate.
- Match the search scope and filters so each tool examines equivalent content.
- Compare the results as well as the elapsed time: a faster search that excludes needed files is not an equivalent answer.
- Repeat with the patterns and file types that matter in your own workflow before standardizing on a tool.
Where ag, ack, and ugrep fit
The ripgrep README names ag, ack, and ugrep among neighboring tools. They are reasonable candidates to evaluate if your requirements point toward them, but the available documentation here does not support a complete, current feature-by-feature comparison. Verify each project’s official materials for its present capabilities, installation options, and platform support rather than inferring parity from its category.

A practical decision
- Start with ripgrep for recursive working-tree searches where ignore-aware defaults are helpful.
- Start with
git grepwhen repository modes, tracked or indexed content, or Git pathspecs define the search. - Before settling on either, verify file-selection behavior and any required regex constructs.
- Use ag, ack, or ugrep only after checking that the current version meets your specific requirements.
- Benchmark equivalent searches on your own data if speed will determine the choice.
