Choose a co-op game by checking three things before anything else: how many people can play at once, whether it connects your group’s exact platforms and storefronts, and whether its difficulty suits the least experienced or least challenge-seeking player. Then verify PC requirements, online access, subscriptions, and how many copies everyone needs.

Start with your group’s actual player count

Count the people who need to play in the same session—not everyone who might occasionally join. A game that supports four players will not fit a regular five-person group, even if it has other multiplayer features. Check whether the advertised number applies to online play, local play, or both, and whether a player can join partway through a session.

For example, the official Deep Rock Galactic FAQ describes the game as a four-player co-op shooter and says solo play is available, with Bosco assisting. That makes it a possible fit for a group of up to four playing together, not a five-person party.

Verify cross-play for every platform and storefront

Write down each person’s device and, on PC, where they own or plan to buy the game. “PC” is not specific enough: cross-play can depend on whether a copy comes from Steam, the Microsoft Store, or another storefront. Confirm the exact combinations supported by the developer before anyone purchases.

Zero Strategy Games Shuffle Dungeons Board Game – Solo and Co-op Dungeon Crawler for 1–4 Players
  • DYNAMIC DUNGEON BUILDER: Modular tiles and evolving layouts create a new adventure every session. Double-sided cards become rooms or gear, so the map shifts as you explore. No two playthroughs are ever the same.
  • TEAMWORK AND TACTICS: Choose from 8 unique heroes and work together in this fully co-op experience. Share loot, combine abilities, and coordinate strategies to survive enemies and defeat the boss.
  • SMART CARD SYSTEM: Every card has two uses—expand the dungeon or boost your hero. This dual-purpose deck system drives deep decisions and exciting trade-offs with just three cards in hand.
  • PLAY SOLO OR TOGETHER: Designed for 1–4 players, with solo rules built in. Whether you're flying solo or gathering your group, the scalable difficulty and quick sessions make it perfect for all setups.
  • BIG FUN, SMALL BOX: Fast setup, quick turns, and replayable modes packed into a compact box. Perfect for weeknights, travel, or casual groups who want a dungeon crawler without the bulk or burnout.

Deep Rock Galactic is a useful example of why this matters. Its official cross-play information says Xbox One and Windows versions bought from the Microsoft Store can play together and share progress; the Steam version does not cross-play with them. The game’s Steam listing also identifies online co-op, but that label alone does not establish compatibility with every PC or console version.

For another example, Arrowhead Game Studios’ January 9, 2024 HELLDIVERS 2 announcement says PC and PS5 players can play together. That dated announcement establishes those platforms; do not assume it covers other systems or that platform support has stayed unchanged. Check the current official listing for the edition you intend to buy.

Match the difficulty to the whole group

Choose around the person who is newest to the genre or least interested in repeated failure. Look for selectable difficulty, tutorials, adjustable assists, forgiving checkpoints, or ways for a more experienced player to help without taking over. These features vary by game, and there is no reliable universal ranking that tells you which co-op games are easiest.

Before buying, inspect the current game page or developer FAQ for the exact difficulty options and assist features. If the group cannot agree on challenge level, favor a game with several difficulty choices or a low-pressure mode rather than relying on one player to carry the rest.

Check hardware, online access, and subscriptions

For PC players, compare the game’s minimum requirements with the least powerful computer in the group; use recommended requirements as a more comfortable target when available. Deep Rock Galactic’s Steam support listing publishes minimum and recommended PC requirements. A compatible platform does not guarantee that every PC can run the game acceptably.

Also check what online play requires on each console and whether an applicable paid subscription is needed. In the January 9, 2024 HELLDIVERS 2 announcement, Arrowhead noted that PS5 gameplay requires internet access and paid PlayStation Plus. Treat that as the announcement’s stated requirement and verify current conditions before purchasing, since platform policies can change.

Confirm copies and editions before anyone pays

For the exact edition and platform each person will use, confirm the supported player count, cross-play, and purchase requirements. Do not assume one person’s purchase lets the rest of the group join: the sources cited here do not establish copy-sharing terms for either example. Check the current official store or developer information to find out whether each player needs a copy and whether editions can play together.
