Choose a chair for how it fits your body and desk—not because the box says “gaming” or “ergonomic.” Check seat height, depth and width, back and lumbar support, and armrests against your measurements and work setup. Your feet should be supported without pressure behind your knees, and the chair should let you work and play without forcing awkward posture.
Start with fit, not the chair category
An ergonomic label does not guarantee a good fit. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) puts it plainly: “One chair does not fit everyone.” It says a chair becomes ergonomic only when it suits the user’s body dimensions, workstation, and tasks. That applies whether you are comparing an office chair with a gaming chair. Make a shortlist using dimensions and adjustments, then assess the actual fit. If possible, try each finalist at the desk where you will use it; comfort and preferences vary from person to person.

Check the seat against your body and desk
Seat height and foot support
Adjust the seat so your feet rest securely on the floor or a footrest, without pressure under your thighs. Then check that you can reach the work surface comfortably. Chair height and desk height work together: a seat position that suits your legs may not suit a fixed desk, and raising the chair to match the desk can leave your feet unsupported.

Seat depth and width
Sit back against the backrest and check whether the seat edge presses behind your knees. Compare the seat’s usable depth with your leg length; a seat that is too deep may prevent you from using the backrest comfortably. Check width as well, including whether the sides or armrests constrain your sitting position.

Backrest and lumbar support
Look for a backrest and lower-back support that can be positioned to suit your sitting posture. A feature called “lumbar support” is useful only if it meets your lower back without creating a pressure point. Check how it adjusts rather than assuming a fixed cushion will land in the right place.
Armrests
Check armrest height and spacing while seated. They should support your arms without pushing your shoulders upward, and should not stop the chair from moving close enough to the desk. A chair that feels comfortable away from the desk can still be a poor match if its armrests collide with the desktop.

Compare gaming and office chairs by useful specifications
Use published dimensions and adjustments to narrow the choices, not the product category. For example, Secretlab’s US TITAN Evo product page lists four-way lumbar adjustment, four-dimensional armrests, a reclining backrest, and S, R, and XL size options. Its technical specification, dated February 24, 2025, lists these dimensions:

For any candidate, compare the same practical points:
- Fit: seat height range, usable depth and width, backrest fit, and armrest position.
- Adjustment: lumbar and backrest adjustment, seat movement, armrests, and recline that suit the way you plan to use the chair.
- Desk compatibility: knee clearance, arm position at the work surface, and supported feet.
- Materials and care: suitability for your climate and household, including heat, moisture, wear, cleaning, maintenance, and repair.
- Trial and purchase terms: try the chair in your setup when possible, and check the seller’s current return terms before buying.
- Cost and warranty: compare current offers and read the written coverage at the time of purchase.
Make the whole workstation work
A chair is one part of the setup. Check its position with the desk, keyboard, and monitor rather than judging it in isolation. OSHA’s computer workstation chair guidance covers chair support, adjustment, and workstation placement.
Also consider how you will change position during the day. A chair cannot resolve every workstation issue; opportunities to stand, walk, or otherwise vary your position matter too.
When a footrest can help
If a fixed-height desk means you need to raise the chair to reach the work surface, but your feet no longer reach the floor comfortably, CCOHS recommends an adjustable footrest that supports both feet. It is a solution for that specific chair-and-desk mismatch, not a requirement for every setup. The goal remains supported feet without pressure under the thighs.
