Start with Apple’s carrier directory for your country or region, then verify eSIM support for the exact iPhone model and plan with the carrier. Compare how you can activate or transfer the eSIM, coverage where you’ll use the phone, plan terms, and support. If you plan to use two different carriers, make sure your iPhone is unlocked.
Check carrier support for your country, iPhone, and plan
eSIM availability depends on the country or region, carrier, plan, and iPhone model. Use Apple’s carrier directory to find providers for your market. The directory identifies carrier eSIM capabilities and, where available, prepaid plans for international travelers; a carrier listing does not mean every plan supports eSIM or every activation method.
Apple documents iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, and later as the baseline for its travel eSIM guidance. Check the carrier’s requirements for your exact model and plan, especially if you have a model intended for a different market. For travel, Apple also advises checking cellular-band compatibility for the destination.
Compare how you can activate or transfer the eSIM
Apple’s directory separates several carrier capabilities. Check that the method you want is listed for the relevant country, and confirm with the carrier that it works for your specific plan.

Check whether your iPhone is unlocked
If you want to use two different carriers on one iPhone, Apple requires the phone to be unlocked. If it is locked, both plans must be from the same carrier. To check, open Settings > General > About and look for No SIM Restrictions next to Carrier Lock. Apple explains this check in its international eSIM travel guidance.

Compare the plans and coverage, not just eSIM availability
Apple’s directory helps identify support and activation categories; it does not rank carriers by value or performance. Compare the provider’s current terms directly before choosing.
- Coverage: Check service at the places you actually use your phone, not only the broad geographic coverage claim. For an organizational deployment, Apple advises asking carriers about coverage and capacity at provisioned locations.
- Plan cost and allowances: Compare recurring price, data, voice and text inclusion, top-ups, and renewal or cancellation terms.
- Roaming: Check which countries are included, whether roaming is an extra charge, and what happens when an allowance is used up.
- Activation and support: Confirm the setup method, help channels, and how the carrier handles activation problems or a device change.
Choose between roaming and a travel eSIM
For international use, you can keep your home carrier and roam, buy a local prepaid plan, or use a plan from a worldwide provider. Apple says eSIM roaming works like roaming with a physical SIM. Check whether your current plan includes roaming, then compare its terms with available travel options. A plan from a different carrier requires an unlocked iPhone; also verify the destination’s cellular bands and that the exact plan supports eSIM.
