Choose a cardigan if you want to adjust warmth easily or layer over a shirt; choose a pullover if you want a continuous knit layer that sits simply under a jacket. Neither is universally better: your daily routine, local climate, preferred fit, and willingness to follow the care label should decide.
Start with how you will wear it
A cardigan has an open front that can be worn open or fastened. That makes it convenient when temperatures change, you frequently take off a layer, or you want to wear knitwear over a tee or shirt. A pullover is pulled over the head and gives you a continuous layer across the front, which can work well under a jacket.
These are practical guidelines, not rules. A light pullover may suit a mild day, and a cardigan may fit under outerwear if it is not too bulky. Think about where the knit will sit in your usual outfit and how often you want to change layers.

Woolmark describes merino as breathable and merino wool as delicate. For a merino sweater, follow the care instructions on the specific garment. For wool or cashmere cardigans, Oui suggests gentle care and flat drying; confirm that advice against the item’s own label before washing.
Check fit with the layers you actually wear
Try the knit over the shirt or tee you expect to wear with it, then under the coat or jacket you use most. This helps reveal whether the combination feels restrictive or adds more bulk than you want.

For a cardigan, check that the shoulders sit comfortably, the sleeves are the right length, and the front closes without pulling. Raise and bend your arms to see whether the fit remains comfortable in motion. These checks are practical ways to assess the fit before committing.
Use this five-step decision process
- Picture a normal day. If you move between temperatures or often remove a layer, start by trying a cardigan. If you mainly want a knit under a jacket, try a pullover.
- Test your usual combinations. Try the garment over your everyday shirt or tee and beneath your regular outerwear.
