Then compare built-in storage, display quality, independently tested battery life and camera samples against your budget and how long you expect to keep it. A large megapixel count, battery capacity or refresh-rate number alone cannot tell you how well a phone will work for you.
What specs matter most in a budget Android phone?
Start with the total price you can spend and how long you plan to use the phone. A low purchase price may be poor value if the model has little support left or lacks the bands your carrier needs. Android phones can differ in screen size, software interface and update timing, as Android explains in its overview of Android. Specifications and availability also vary by region, so compare the exact local version rather than a listing for another country.
- Check software support and carrier compatibility. These can determine whether the phone remains secure and works on your network.
- Compare built-in storage and physical RAM. Expansion and software memory features are not equivalent to internal storage or physical RAM.
- Evaluate the display, battery and camera as real-world experiences. Look for credible reviews and samples, not just headline specifications.
- Check durability and useful extras. Consider the features you will actually use, such as NFC, a headphone jack or water protection.
How important are Android updates?
Find the manufacturer’s support information for the exact model and region. Record how many Android version upgrades are promised, when security updates are scheduled to end, and how often updates are expected if the manufacturer publishes that detail. Google’s Android Enterprise Recommended program has update-disclosure requirements for participating devices; those requirements are not a guarantee for every consumer phone.
For an older or used phone, focus on the support remaining from the day you buy it—not the full support period announced at launch. Android Central’s under-$200 phone roundup cautions that support can be short in this price category and advises checking how much time remains on older models. That is editorial guidance, not a universal support policy.

How do I check if an Android phone works with my carrier?
Confirm compatibility with the carrier and country where you intend to use the phone. Check the exact model’s supported 4G and 5G bands and any carrier-specific requirements. Also verify that the phone is unlocked if you need it to work across networks, and that the specific regional version includes features you need, such as NFC.
Manufacturer specification pages can help identify the variant. For example, Motorola lists bands and NFC on its U.S. Moto G Play (2026) specifications page and notes that specifications may vary by market. Do not infer that a model sold in one country has the same bands or features as a similarly named version elsewhere.
How much RAM and storage do I need?
Prioritize built-in storage
Compare internal storage first. The operating system and preinstalled content take up some of the advertised capacity, so usable space is lower. A microSD slot can be helpful for supported files, but it is not a universal replacement for built-in storage.

Do not count a software feature as extra physical RAM. Motorola distinguishes the Moto G Play’s physical RAM from its RAM Boost feature; boosted memory should not be described as additional installed RAM. A single RAM figure also cannot predict how responsive a phone will feel. Look for reviews or hands-on evaluations involving the apps and tasks you use.
What should I look for in the display?
Consider resolution, panel type, brightness evidence, refresh rate, size and readability together. A higher refresh rate can make scrolling look smoother, but it does not establish how sharp or bright the screen is.

Motorola lists a 6.7-inch HD+ LCD with a 120 Hz refresh rate for the U.S. Moto G Play (2026), while the U.S. Moto G Power (2026) has a 6.8-inch Full HD+ LCD, also at 120 Hz. The same refresh-rate figure does not make these screens equivalent: resolution and size differ, and those specifications still do not tell you everything about brightness or readability.
How can I judge battery life and charging?
Battery capacity in milliamp-hours is not a direct measure of how long a phone lasts. Prefer credible battery tests conducted under conditions comparable to your use, and consider screen size, processor, network connection and your typical workload. Motorola lists a 5,200 mAh battery for the U.S. Moto G Play (2026) and claims “up to 2 days of battery”; that duration is a manufacturer claim, not an independent test result.
Check charging speed, connector type and whether a compatible charger is included in the package for your region. Wattage alone does not establish that one phone is a better choice.

How should I compare budget-phone cameras?
Look at photo and video samples that match what you photograph: people, low light, moving subjects, zoom or social video. Megapixels alone do not establish image quality. The available specifications for the examples here do not include a controlled camera comparison, so there is no basis for claiming one performs better. Use independent reviews with relevant sample images rather than relying on a camera’s headline resolution.
Which durability features and extras are worth checking?
Verify the exact model’s weight, dimensions, water- and dust-protection claims, warranty and repair options, headphone support, NFC and SIM configuration. Features vary by market and variant. Give priority to requirements you will use, and confirm they appear on the listing for the actual device you intend to buy.

How do I check Play Protect certification?
Google says Play Protect-certified devices have passed Android compatibility testing. It warns that uncertified devices may not receive Android system or app updates, and that some apps, features and backups may not work correctly. On the phone, open Google Play Store > profile icon > Settings > About and look for Play Protect certification. Certification is a compatibility baseline, not a substitute for confirming the manufacturer’s support commitments.
How to compare two phones before buying
Write down the options and compare them using the same criteria. Give more weight to the items that matter for your usage rather than treating any one specification as decisive.
