Choose a BMC as part of the complete server platform, then verify that the exact hardware and firmware expose the management functions your data center needs. A Redfish label or OpenBMC lineage is not enough: compare the required resources, accelerator telemetry and controls, firmware lifecycle, security behavior, integrations, and support ownership on the system you plan to deploy.

Start with the server’s management architecture

A baseboard management controller (BMC) provides out-of-band hardware management, but not every AI server uses the same arrangement. Some platforms expose management through a dedicated BMC; others can provide a Redfish service through software. Where a BMC is present, its design—including whether it is part of a hardware management module—affects what the management interface can see and control.

The Open Compute Project’s Open Systems for AI whitepaper describes a Redfish interface for platform manageability and identifies the OCP Baseline Hardware Management profile as a minimum. It also describes a GPU Management profile for AI processors, plus profiles for hardware management modules and modular baseboards. Ask the server vendor which architecture and profile apply to the specific platform; do not assume a profile applies simply because a product is marketed for AI.

Firmware lifecycle How are version, inventory, staging, activation, compatibility, and recovery handled? Release policy and a tested upgrade and recovery procedure.
Security and operations How are credentials, sessions, network isolation, TLS, logs, and client load handled? Security configuration, event evidence, and session/load test results.
Integration and support Which management tools are supported, and who owns an issue spanning the server, firmware, and accelerator? Support matrix, escalation path, and pilot results.

Test Redfish behavior, not just standards claims

Redfish gives management clients a common interface, but it does not guarantee that two implementations expose the same optional resources, actions, or vendor extensions. NVIDIA’s Platform Management Interface documentation, for example, describes a Redfish HTTPS REST interface alongside IPMI support and explains that implementations can vary.

Translate the data-center workflow into explicit tests: enumerate the relevant resources, read the required properties, invoke the actions your automation needs, and verify expected results and error handling. Record whether each function uses a standard resource or an OEM extension. Repeat those tests against every target BMC firmware build; a successful test on one server or release is not proof of parity across a fleet.

Verify AI telemetry and power controls on the exact topology

For AI systems, confirm that out-of-band management can provide the information and controls the operations stack actually consumes. That may include telemetry and power management at the accelerator, module, or node level. The relevant endpoints and supported actions can depend on the combination of accelerator, server design, and firmware, so a general feature statement is not sufficient.

NVIDIA’s DPS Redfish API guide documents telemetry and power-management operations for supported NVIDIA systems, with topology-specific paths and firmware requirements. Its current documentation lists systems including DGX H100/H200, DGX B200, DGX B300, GB200 NVL, GB300 NVL, and Vera Rubin NVL72. Treat those requirements as version-specific: check the documentation for the precise system and deployed release before rollout, and test the actual endpoints and actions your orchestrator will use.

Make firmware lifecycle part of the selection

A BMC’s firmware version and update behavior are operational requirements, not details to postpone until deployment. Capture the manufacturer and BMC type, firmware build, Redfish version, and supported or unsupported endpoints for every candidate. Ask how firmware inventory is exposed, how updates are staged and activated, what compatibility constraints apply, and what recovery or rollback procedure is supported.

Require a tested procedure for upgrading and recovering the BMC as part of the pilot. NVIDIA’s BMC readiness guide advises confirming endpoint support on every target BMC and recording its identity, firmware build, Redfish version, and endpoint coverage. HPE’s GB200 NVL72 compute-tray BMC guide is an example of vendor documentation covering setup, access, status, sessions, and Redfish firmware updates.

Include security and client behavior in the pilot

Test the management network and client behavior under the conditions your fleet will create. Review credential and session handling, TLS configuration, access isolation, logging, connection limits, and the effect of repeated polling or failed requests. Ask the vendor for supported configuration guidance and verify that it fits your own security and operations requirements.

For its GB200/GB300 DPS use case, NVIDIA advises no more than four simultaneous BMC client connections, including two DPS connections, and recommends session-token authentication with keep-alive connections. This is guidance for those systems and that use case, not a general connection limit for all BMCs. Use the target platform’s documentation and load testing to establish appropriate client behavior.

Assess open-source firmware and support as separate questions

OpenBMC is an open-source firmware stack intended for heterogeneous enterprise, HPC, telco, and cloud-scale data centers. NVIDIA documents its BlueField BMC as OpenBMC-based and using Yocto. These examples show that OpenBMC is used in vendor platforms; they do not establish that all OpenBMC-based systems offer the same features or support arrangements.

Evaluate the implementation and the support commitment independently. Ask who maintains the platform-specific firmware, publishes security fixes, qualifies releases, and owns escalation through the product lifecycle. Obtain written answers on maintenance and support expectations; the available examples do not establish a cross-vendor comparison of those commitments. See the OpenBMC project and NVIDIA BlueField BMC management documentation for the project and one vendor-specific implementation.

Run a representative pilot before committing

  1. Define the required workflows. List the telemetry, power controls, inventory, recovery, and update operations that your monitoring and orchestration systems must perform.
  2. Choose representative hardware and firmware. Include each server and accelerator topology you expect to deploy, and record the BMC build and Redfish version for each test target.
  3. Exercise the endpoints. Test the required reads, actions, and update operations; record standard versus OEM behavior, unsupported endpoints, and any differences between builds.
  4. Test operational conditions. Check authentication, network isolation, logs, client/session behavior, and recovery from an interrupted or unsuccessful update.
  5. Close ownership gaps. Confirm tool compatibility, release and security maintenance expectations, and the escalation route when responsibility crosses vendors.
  6. Recheck requirements at deployment. Firmware and API support can change; verify the deployed release against current vendor documentation and rerun the relevant tests before fleet rollout.

Supermicro’s Redfish API page is another example of vendor management documentation. Such examples establish that vendor implementations and materials exist, but they do not constitute a comparable feature or support assessment across vendors.
