Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Choose a Bitcoin wallet by matching its security and recovery requirements to how you’ll use it: a connected mobile wallet can suit small, frequent payments, while savings may call for offline key storage or a hardware wallet. In either case, self-custody means you—not a wallet company—must protect the keys and recovery information that control your bitcoin.
What self-custody means—and what a wallet does
A Bitcoin wallet manages the private keys that authorize spending; it does not hold coins like a physical wallet. Bitcoin.org explains that a recovery phrase can restore a wallet, and anyone who obtains that phrase may be able to access the corresponding bitcoin. Bitcoin.org’s wallet security guidance explains the responsibilities involved.
With self-custody, you control the keys, but you also take responsibility for securing and backing them up. Bitcoin.org states: “No one—not developers, miners, wallet providers, or exchanges—can recover funds that you permanently lose from a self-custodied wallet.” If the recovery information is permanently lost, funds may be inaccessible permanently.
Choose a wallet type for the way you use Bitcoin
| Wallet type | May suit | Key trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile wallet | Convenient access and face-to-face transactions | A phone can be lost or compromised. App availability and backup behavior matter; keep only an appropriate everyday amount connected. Bitcoin.org recommends keeping only small amounts on everyday devices. |
| Desktop software wallet | People who want desktop access and potentially richer configuration | Security depends partly on the computer’s condition. Some wallets rely on remote servers; a wallet paired with a full node can verify independently. Bitcoin.org’s wallet directory compares these approaches. |
| Hardware wallet | People seeking offline key handling for savings or larger balances | Requires setup, compatible software, and a safe recovery backup. It can limit some risks from a connected computer, but does not prevent user error or eliminate recovery risk. Bitcoin.org’s security guidance covers offline storage and backups. |
| Multisignature wallet | People who want to avoid one key or location being the sole point of control | Spending may require multiple independent approvals, so setup, coordination, and recovery planning are more complex. Bitcoin.org notes that multisignature can prevent theft resulting from compromise of one device or location. See its security guidance. |
These options are not mutually exclusive: you might use a connected wallet for routine spending and keep savings in a separate, more carefully protected setup. The useful question is not which type is universally best, but which trade-offs you can manage reliably.

Compare the security and usability details
Before choosing a specific wallet, compare more than its device type. Bitcoin.org’s directory uses control, validation, transparency, operating environment, privacy, and fees as comparison criteria. Its ratings are the directory’s assessments, not independent hands-on test results. Review the directory and its criteria.
- Key control: Confirm who controls the keys and what access the wallet provider has. Self-custody depends on you retaining control of the keys and recovery information.
- Validation and third-party reliance: A full node independently verifies blocks and transactions. Other wallets may use simplified validation or depend on remote servers. Consider how much you want to rely on another party.
- Device environment: A wallet’s security also depends on the phone or computer it runs on and how that device is maintained.
- Transparency: Check whether source code is available and whether the project describes reproducible builds. These details help assess transparency but are not a guarantee of security.
- Privacy: Consider what information the wallet or its connections may expose. Bitcoin transactions are public and permanent; self-custody does not make Bitcoin anonymous.
- Fees and compatibility: Look at fee controls, supported platforms, and address compatibility with the services or wallets you expect to use.
- Backup and recovery: Understand exactly what you must preserve and how restoration works before storing funds.
Understand backup and recovery before adding funds
Bitcoin.org defines a recovery phrase, also called a seed phrase or mnemonic, as “a sequence of words from which a wallet can be fully restored.” Treat it as a secret: anyone who obtains it may gain access to the bitcoin it restores. Read Bitcoin.org’s guidance on securing a wallet.

- Back up the entire wallet, not just the addresses or keys currently visible. Check the wallet’s own instructions: some wallets may require regular backups, while modern deterministic wallets may restore addresses from one recovery phrase.
- Keep recovery information private and physically secure. Consider whether more than one secure physical location is appropriate, and use durable media. Do not assume that photographing or uploading a phrase is safe.
- Understand password and passphrase consequences before enabling them. Bitcoin.org warns that forgotten wallet passwords have very limited recovery options.
- Plan for inheritance without exposing the phrase during your lifetime. A trusted person needs a way to locate the wallet and understand the recovery plan if you can no longer manage it.
- Keep wallet software current so you receive security fixes.
Examples to evaluate, not universal recommendations
Bitcoin.org’s hardware-wallet directory lists examples including BitBox02, Jade models, Coldcard, Passport, Trezor Safe 3, and Trezor Safe 5. Listings, features, and availability can change; check current support and the manufacturer’s official documentation before purchasing. See Bitcoin.org’s wallet directory.
BitBox02
Bitcoin.org’s BitBox02 profile describes USB-C and USB-A support and offline backups to microSD card and BIP39 mnemonic. The profile rates control, transparency, and environment “Good”; it says validation, privacy, and fee control depend on the software wallet used with it. These are directory profile details, not hands-on testing or a recommendation for every user. Check the directory profile.

Electrum
Bitcoin.org describes Electrum as focused on speed and simplicity, using remote servers and allowing recovery from a secret phrase. The directory characterizes its validation as simplified and less secure than a full node, and notes source-code and deterministic-build transparency. Treat these as the directory’s descriptions, not a current independent audit. Review Bitcoin.org’s Electrum listing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical way to decide
- Separate spending from savings. Estimate what you need available for routine transactions, then choose a connected wallet only for an amount you are prepared to keep on an everyday device.
- Choose your validation model. Decide whether a wallet that relies on remote servers or simplified validation meets your needs, or whether you want the independence of verifying with a full node.
- Check setup and compatibility. Confirm that the wallet supports your devices, the address formats you need, and the fee controls you expect to use.
- Test your recovery plan before relying on it. Follow the wallet’s instructions to understand how a backup restores access. Protect the phrase or other recovery information from both loss and exposure.
- Match complexity to your confidence. A multisignature setup can reduce dependence on a single key or location, but only makes sense if you can coordinate its approvals and preserve a workable recovery plan.
