Choose a U.S. bank or credit union by confirming that it supports your exact exchange, account type, transfer direction, and payment method—not by relying on a “crypto-friendly” label. Before you move money, ask both the bank and exchange about transfer limits, fees, holds, eligibility, documentation, and what to do if a payment is delayed or rejected. Federal permission for certain banks to conduct crypto-related activities does not guarantee that a bank will accept a particular customer’s transaction.
Start with your actual transfer pattern
Write down how you expect to move money: from your bank to an exchange, from the exchange back to your bank, or both. Include the exchange’s exact name, whether the account is personal or business, and the payment method you plan to use. Then confirm that the specific bank account can handle those transfers. Ask the bank and the exchange separately; one organization’s answer does not establish the other’s policy.
Use direct questions rather than asking whether the institution is generally “crypto friendly.” Policies and transfer terms can depend on the account, transaction, and payment rail. A successful first transfer is not a guarantee that later transfers will be accepted.
What to compare before choosing an account
- Transfer compatibility: Confirm the permitted transfer direction, supported payment rail, and how the transfer must be initiated for your named exchange.
- Limits, fees, and timing: Ask for applicable per-transfer and daily limits, fees, processing expectations, holds, and any review or exception process. No current bank-by-bank fee or limit comparison is established here, so verify the terms with the institutions.
- Eligibility and documentation: Ask which account types qualify and what information may be requested about your planned activity. Do not assume a personal-account policy also applies to a business account.
- Support and continuity: Find out how to contact the bank about a delayed or rejected transfer and how it communicates restrictions or requests for more information.
- Ordinary account terms: Compare the account’s standard fees, access, and features on their own merits. Crypto-transfer compatibility does not make an otherwise unsuitable account a good choice.
- Dispute handling: Ask how the institution handles disputes involving debit cards and other electronic transfers. CFPB guidance on unauthorized transfers is limited to its stated conditions; it does not cover every problem involving crypto.
Choose between a conventional account and a crypto-specific service
| Approach | Best fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional bank or credit-union account | You want ordinary banking and need to move cash to or from an exchange. | Confirm that the exact account supports your exchange transfers, and check fees, limits, eligibility, documentation, support, and ordinary account terms. |
| Provider advertising crypto-related banking or custody | You specifically want a service such as crypto custody, trading, stablecoin activity, or safekeeping. | Assess the product’s own terms, legal disclosures, and risks. A provider’s marketing or regulatory status does not prove that a particular transfer will be accepted or that crypto assets have deposit insurance. |
These are different needs. An ordinary account that supports transfers is not the same product as a service that holds or trades crypto assets.

What U.S. banking rules do—and do not—tell you
Federal guidance describes activities certain supervised institutions may conduct; it is not a directory of banks that accept retail customers’ exchange transfers. The agencies’ positions also do not require a particular bank to offer a service or accept a specific transaction.
FDIC-supervised institutions
On March 28, 2025, the FDIC clarified that FDIC-supervised institutions may engage in permissible crypto-related activities without prior FDIC approval. It also said institutions should manage risks such as market and liquidity, operational and cybersecurity, consumer-protection, and anti-money-laundering risks. The statement concerns permissible institutional activities, not a promise of service to an individual customer. Read the FDIC guidance.

National banks and federal savings associations
On March 7, 2025, the OCC confirmed that specified activities—including crypto-asset custody, certain stablecoin activities, and participation in independent node verification networks—are permissible for national banks and federal savings associations, and rescinded the prior supervisory-nonobjection requirement for those activities. The OCC said banks must act safely, soundly, fairly, and in compliance with applicable law. Acting Comptroller Rodney E. Hood said the OCC expects banks to maintain strong risk-management controls for novel activities. These agency statements do not establish the retail transfer policy of a bank you are considering. Read the OCC release and OCC Bulletin 2025-7.
On May 7, 2025, the OCC separately confirmed that national banks and federal savings associations may buy and sell assets held in custody at a customer’s direction and may outsource permissible custody and execution activities, subject to appropriate third-party risk management. This is an authority statement, not evidence that every retail bank provides those services. Read the OCC release.

Safekeeping is separate from ordinary banking
On July 14, 2025, the FDIC, Federal Reserve Board, and OCC issued a joint statement on risk management for crypto-asset safekeeping. They said existing risk-management principles apply and safekeeping must comply with applicable law and regulation; the OCC noted the statement did not create new supervisory expectations. It does not show that a given bank offers consumer crypto custody. Read the joint statement and OCC Bulletin 2025-26.
The agencies’ January 2023 joint statement described risks in the crypto sector, including fraud and scams, legal uncertainty around custody, redemptions and ownership, and volatility. In March 2025, the OCC withdrew from that statement as it applied to national banks and federal savings associations. Read the January 2023 statement and the OCC’s 2025 bulletin.

Know the limits of electronic-transfer protections
CFPB error-resolution guidance concerns unauthorized electronic transfers from a bank or credit-union account, subject to the rules’ conditions. It should not be treated as protection for a crypto purchase you authorized, a blockchain transaction, or an entry in an exchange’s internal ledger.
For an unauthorized transaction, the CFPB says the institution generally has ten business days to investigate, or 20 business days if the account has been open for less than 30 days. After determining that an error occurred, it must correct the error within one business day and report its findings within three business days. If it cannot finish within the applicable period, it generally must provide temporary credit, subject to conditions and exceptions. The issue generally must be resolved within 45 days, with specified cases allowing up to 90 days. The CFPB page was last reviewed August 28, 2026; consult its guidance for the conditions and exceptions that apply to your situation. Read the CFPB’s electronic-transfer guidance.

A practical verification checklist
- Identify the exact setup: Note the exchange, personal or business account type, transfer direction, and payment method you intend to use.
- Ask the exchange: Confirm it accepts transfers from and to the bank account and payment rail you plan to use, and ask about its own limits, fees, holds, and verification requirements.
- Ask the bank or credit union: Confirm its current policy for the named exchange and account type. Ask about limits, fees, timing, holds, documentation, and possible restrictions.
- Get key terms in writing: Save the applicable account and transfer terms, plus any written confirmation from support. Ask how to escalate a rejected or delayed transaction.
- Compare the whole account: Evaluate routine fees and access as well as transfer fit. Treat custody or trading terms as a separate product decision.
