Choose a 4K gaming projector by matching its resolution and refresh rate to the mode you want to play, then checking input lag for that exact mode. Next, make sure the room, throw distance, ports, and audio connections work with your setup. A projector advertised as “4K” may deliver its fastest refresh rate only at 1080p, and a low-lag figure does not necessarily apply to every signal mode.
Start with the resolution and refresh rate you want
Decide whether you care more about a detailed 4K image or a higher frame rate. Then check the projector’s supported resolution-and-refresh combinations, not just its headline resolution or maximum Hz figure. A product can accept 4K at 60Hz while offering faster play at 1080p; those are different gaming modes.
For example, BenQ markets the TK700 as a 4K HDR console gaming projector, but its published specifications list 4K at 60Hz and 1080p at up to 240Hz as separate modes. Epson UK describes 4K over HDMI 2.1 and 120fps for compatible models; that claim does not apply to every Epson projector. Check the exact model and signal mode in the manufacturer’s documentation: BenQ TK700 specifications and Epson UK gaming projectors.
Compare input lag at that same mode
Input lag is the delay between a device sending an image and the projector displaying it. For a useful comparison, find a figure for the resolution and refresh rate you plan to use. A low number quoted for 1080p/240Hz is not a 4K/60Hz measurement.

| Example | Manufacturer-published mode and input lag | What the figure tells you |
|---|---|---|
| BenQ TK700 | 4K/60Hz: 16.7 ms; 1080p/120Hz: 8.3 ms; 1080p/240Hz: 4.2 ms | Lag changes with the selected mode. These are BenQ specifications, not independent comparative measurements. BenQ specifications. |
| ViewSonic PX701-4K | 4.2 ms input lag; the cited product page does not establish the mode for this figure | Do not assume the number applies to every resolution and refresh rate. Check the current regional technical specification. ViewSonic product page. |
There is no universal “good” lag cutoff established by these specifications. The difference may matter more in timing-sensitive competitive games than in slower-paced games, so compare figures for the modes you will actually use rather than treating one number as a verdict. Epson also notes that input-lag measurement is not standardized and can vary with signal and settings: Epson UK gaming projector guidance.
Check the room, screen size, and placement
Projector performance depends on the room and installation as well as the device. Ambient light, image size, brightness, contrast, and placement affect what the picture looks like. A manufacturer’s lumen rating is not a guarantee of the same perceived image quality in every room.

- Consider how much light will be present while you play, including daylight and room lighting.
- Choose a screen size that suits the viewing distance and the room; a larger image is not automatically a better fit.
- Work out where the projector can sit and confirm that its throw distance supports your intended image size.
- Review manufacturer setup and buying guidance for brightness, image quality, and screen size, such as BenQ’s gaming projector buying guide and ViewSonic’s projector buying guide.
Verify every link in the video signal chain
Check the projector’s specific HDMI input, the source device’s output modes, and any receiver, adapter, or switch in between. The capabilities of the complete chain determine which signal reaches the projector. Epson’s 4K/120fps guidance is for compatible HDMI 2.1 models; ViewSonic lists HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 1.4/2.2 for the PX701-4K. Those examples are not interchangeable port specifications.
Before buying, confirm the exact regional model’s port capabilities and supported resolution/refresh combinations in its current specification sheet. Also verify that your console or PC can output the mode you want through the equipment you plan to connect.

Plan how you will handle audio
If you use an AV receiver or soundbar, confirm the audio return feature and connection path on the projector and the other equipment. Check whether the setup calls for ARC or eARC, and whether the relevant ports support it. BenQ’s and ViewSonic’s buying guidance can help frame installation and external-audio considerations, but the connection must be verified for your particular devices.

- Epson compatible HDMI 2.1 models: Epson UK advertises 4K and 120fps for compatible models and cautions that lag varies with signal and settings. Do not extend that capability to the full lineup.
