Choose a 3D scanner by starting with the result you need: an inspection measurement, a mesh for 3D printing, or an editable CAD model. Those jobs can use related capture hardware, but they require different levels of performance, software, and follow-up work. Match the scanner to your part, surfaces, working conditions, and required tolerances—not just its headline accuracy figure.
Start with the output you need
The same scan data can support different workflows, but capturing a shape is not the same as inspecting it or rebuilding it as CAD. Decide what must be delivered before comparing scanners.
Dimensional inspection
For metrology, the goal is to compare measured geometry with a design, nominal dimensions, or specified tolerances. The scanner, tracking method, setup, and inspection software all affect whether the result is useful for that task. Establish the tolerance you need to evaluate, then check that the vendor’s stated performance and measurement conditions are relevant. A product’s maximum advertised accuracy alone does not establish that it is suitable for a particular inspection.
A mesh for 3D printing
If you need a printable representation of an object, prioritize capture coverage and detail at the object’s scale, plus an export that works with your mesh-editing or slicing workflow. You may still need to clean the scan, fill gaps, or adjust the mesh before printing. A scanner marketed for 3D printing is not automatically validated for dimensional inspection.

Editable CAD for reverse engineering
Reverse engineering usually means more than capturing a surface mesh. The scan must be processed, and its geometry reconstructed into CAD surfaces or features in software suited to the job. If the deliverable must be an editable parametric model, include that reconstruction workflow—and compatible software—in your choice, rather than assuming the scanner creates CAD by itself.
How do laser and structured-light scanners differ?
“3D scanner” covers several capture methods, not one interchangeable class of device. Hexagon’s guide to inspection for additive manufacturing describes laser-line triangulation and structured-light scanning as two common optical approaches. These descriptions indicate tendencies, not guaranteed performance for every scanner or surface.

Other methods broaden the category further: Hexagon’s beginner guide also discusses time-of-flight laser scanning and photogrammetry. Do not choose by technology name alone; compare the device’s intended task, capture geometry, and stated performance for your application.
Check the part, capture area, and working conditions
A scanner needs to see the surfaces that matter, at a usable scale and from workable positions. Before shopping, note the part’s approximate dimensions, smallest features, surface finish, access constraints, and the environment where scanning will happen.

- Scale and detail: Compare the minimum and maximum object sizes, working distance, field of view, capture area, and resolution or point-spacing information stated for the model. A scanner suited to small components may not cover a large object efficiently, and a large capture area may not resolve the detail required on a small feature.
- Coverage and access: Consider whether the scanner can see the relevant sides and recesses, how the system tracks movement between views, and whether targets or reference tracking are acceptable in your workflow.
- Surface and environment: Ask the vendor how the scanner handles your actual dark, reflective, or shiny surfaces and the ambient-light conditions. A general tendency attributed to a technology is not a substitute for checking the model on your part.
- Operator and computer workflow: Include setup effort, computer requirements, software licensing, training, and support in the decision. For demanding parts or inspection work, ask whether a demonstration or application review is available.
How should you interpret scanner accuracy claims?
Accuracy figures are useful only with their measurement context. Manufacturers may state an “up to” value under particular conditions; that is not an independent comparison, a guarantee for every object, or proof that the device meets your tolerance. Do not rank scanners by isolated figures unless the measurement conditions and protocols are comparable.
Look for the stated accuracy context, repeatability evidence, working distance, and any relevant conditions in the current specification. Then evaluate the scanner against representative parts and the tolerances you actually need to assess. The available product information here is primarily manufacturer material; it does not establish an independent head-to-head ranking or a universal method for interpreting every vendor’s accuracy claim. For high-consequence decisions, validate the workflow before relying on its results.

Match the software and file output to the next step
Choose the full workflow, not just the capture device. Check how scan data is registered or tracked, what cleanup is needed, what formats can be exported, and whether the next application can use those outputs.
- Capture: Scan the part using a setup and tracking method appropriate to its size, surfaces, and access.
- Prepare the scan: Inspect the resulting data and refine the mesh if needed. Hexagon’s reverse-engineering guide notes that mesh preparation may include filling gaps or changing triangle count.
- Send it to the right application: Use a mesh workflow for printing, CAD-reconstruction software for editable models, or inspection and reporting software for dimensional evaluation. Check compatibility with your existing CAD, slicer, or inspection tools.
Hexagon describes Geomagic Design X as combining scan-data processing with history-based CAD for creating editable parametric solid models. That illustrates why scan-to-CAD may require dedicated software in addition to a scanner. Software choice also matters when handling large datasets and connecting the reconstructed model to your CAD environment.

A practical selection checklist
- Write down the deliverable: inspection result, printable mesh, or editable CAD model.
- Record the part’s size, smallest important details, surface types, and access constraints.
- Identify required tolerances if inspection is involved, and ask for performance evidence that applies to those conditions.
- Compare working distance, field of view, scan volume, capture coverage, tracking, and environmental requirements—not only accuracy.
- Confirm software, cleanup or reconstruction needs, file exports, computer requirements, and compatibility with your existing tools.
- For a high-consequence or specialized application, arrange a demonstration or application review using representative parts before committing.
