Choose a 3D printer by starting with the part’s service conditions—not by looking for a printer or filament labeled “automotive.” Temperature under load, forces, chemicals, moisture, UV exposure, geometry, production quantity, and failure consequences determine which process and material are worth evaluating.
Define what “durable” means for the part
Write down the conditions the finished part must survive before comparing printers. A flexible seal, workshop fixture, intermittently impacted bracket, and under-hood enclosure do not have the same requirements.
- Temperature under load: Estimate the part’s actual temperature while it carries its expected load, including the duration and frequency of exposure.
- Forces and impact: Note whether loads are static, repeated, vibrational, or shock-like, and identify likely directions of force.
- Exposure: Account for fluids and chemicals, moisture, UV light, weather, and any cleaning agents the part may encounter.
- Geometry and fit: Specify dimensions, tolerances, wall thicknesses, mating surfaces, and features that could concentrate stress.
- Quantity and consequences: Distinguish a one-off prototype from repeat small-batch production, and consider what happens if the part cracks, deforms, or detaches.
Heat deflection temperature (HDT) can help screen materials, but it is measured under specified conditions, not as a universal continuous-use limit. Formlabs’ material guide reports HDT at 0.45 MPa and cautions that heat performance must be considered alongside other mechanical properties. Read the Formlabs material guide.
Compare the printing processes that fit the job
The process affects material options, part geometry, production workflow, and the evidence you will need before putting a part into service. A polymer name alone does not predict how a printed part will perform.

| Process | When to consider it | What to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| FDM | When a suitable filament grade, part size, and printer capability align with the application. | Confirm the exact filament’s extruder and bed temperature requirements against the printer’s specifications. For demanding high-temperature materials, a closed chamber is recommended for consistent printing. Build volume, orientation, layer-related design constraints, and material compatibility matter. |
| SLS | For complex functional nylon parts and repeated small-batch production where powder-based production fits the workflow. | Evaluate the complete system, powder handling, nesting and batch efficiency, part dimensions, and required post-processing—not just the material data sheet. |
| SLA | When fine surface detail or a specialty resin’s properties suit the part. | A high HDT alone does not show that a resin part will withstand repeated vehicle loads. Check the resin’s mechanical properties, exposure limits, geometry, and validation requirements. |
Formlabs’ guidance says PEEK and ULTEM require specialized industrial FDM printers; they are not materials to assume a typical desktop FDM machine can print. See Formlabs’ material and process guidance.
Screen candidate materials without treating data-sheet values as guarantees
For nylon powder, Formlabs lists the following HDT figures at 0.45 MPa. These are vendor material metrics under a specified test load, not assurances that a finished automotive part is safe at the same temperature in service.

| Formlabs powder | HDT at 0.45 MPa | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Nylon 12 Powder | 171 °C | Use as a screening metric; verify the part’s load, geometry, environment, and design-specific performance. |
| Nylon 11 Powder | 182 °C | Use as a screening metric; the figure is not a universal continuous-use limit. |
| Nylon 11 CF Powder | 188 °C | Use as a screening metric; confirm suitability for the part rather than selecting on HDT alone. |
The figures are from Formlabs’ undated technical guide accessed in 2026. The guide also covers other material properties that should be considered with HDT. Consult the guide for material details.
For common engineering filaments, compare the exact grade’s published requirements with the printer maker’s compatibility information for the extruder, bed, and chamber. “Nylon,” “PETG,” or another broad family name is not enough to establish compatibility or service durability.

Check whether the printer can reliably produce the part and the quantity
After narrowing the material and process, compare the entire workflow rather than the headline build volume or maximum nozzle temperature. These factors can change both feasibility and cost:
- Temperature capability: Verify supported extruder and bed temperatures and, where needed, chamber conditions against the chosen material’s requirements.
- Build volume and batch efficiency: Confirm that the part fits in its intended orientation and assess how many parts can be produced in a build.
- Dimensional and surface needs: Check resolution, tolerances, and whether the process can produce required mating features and finishes.
- Post-processing: Include support removal, powder removal, finishing, or other steps in the time and labor estimate.
- Costs: Compare equipment, consumables, maintenance, labor, and waste across the expected production volume. The available sources do not establish a neutral, current price comparison across printer brands.
- Validation: Plan how you will verify fit, mechanical performance, environmental resistance, and repeatability for the actual part.
Use case studies as examples, not universal test results
Formlabs’ 2023 KUHMUTE case study describes one company’s internal testing of charging-hub parts. The company reported that its FDM PETG and nylon samples broke during long-distance shipping, while its SLS Nylon 12 samples survived. It also reported FDM deformation in a charging hub operating at up to 90 °C. Those results apply to the company’s geometry, equipment, materials, and test protocol; they do not establish that SLS will outperform FDM for every design or printer.

The same case study describes KUHMUTE’s powder-removal and dyeing workflow as simple for its needs. That is a company account of its own production process, not a general guarantee about SLS post-processing. Read the KUHMUTE case study.
A separate Formlabs automotive case study quotes a Jasper Engines & Transmissions team member: “Glass-filled nylon is a very common material in automotive components. Once Nylon 12 GF Powder became available, it opened up a broader range of parts that could be used in production,” said Petty. This illustrates one company’s use of a particular material; it is not a general qualification for automotive service. Read the Jasper Engines & Transmissions case study.

Choose a sensible next step for your application
For a common engineering-filament part
Start with the exact filament grade’s requirements and the printer manufacturer’s compatibility table. Confirm the extruder, bed, and chamber conditions, then assess whether the design and intended environment call for testing beyond a prototype fit check.
For complex functional nylon parts or recurring small batches
Include SLS in the comparison. Assess whether its powder workflow, build arrangement, dimensions, and post-processing suit your production needs, and evaluate the finished part against the same service conditions as any FDM or SLA option.
For safety-critical or severe-service parts
Under-hood, structural, braking, steering, restraint, and other safety-critical components need design-specific validation and qualified engineering review. The cited guidance and case studies do not establish road-use certification or universal safety thresholds for printed parts.
