To check your U.S. voter registration, start at USAGov’s voter registration status page, select your state, and follow its link to the official state election website. Use that state’s lookup to confirm your record and assigned polling place; contact your state or local election office if the result is missing or unclear. Check well before the registration deadline, and recheck your polling place before Election Day.

Check your voter registration status

  1. Open USAGov’s voter registration status page and choose the option to check your registration status.

  2. Select your state, then continue to the official state election website. The state’s site—not a national database—provides the voter record and final instructions.

  3. Review the record for your registration status and the personal details shown, such as your name and residential address. A party-affiliation field may not appear because some states do not require party affiliation.

USAGov’s status guidance was last updated February 23, 2026. If the record is missing, marked inactive, or otherwise unclear, contact the election office before the deadline and ask what action is needed. An inactive registration may require extra steps; USAGov warns that failing to address it may mean voting by provisional ballot.

Find your assigned polling place and hours

Use the polling-place lookup linked by your state’s election website, or contact your state or local election office to confirm the location and hours. Your polling place is assigned based on your residential address, and it can change between elections. Check the assignment close to Election Day rather than relying on a location you used before.

Do not assume you can vote at any polling place. Going to the wrong location may require a provisional ballot, and the vote may not count. USAGov’s polling-place guidance, last updated February 23, 2026, directs voters to verify their location with election officials.

Update your registration after a move or name change

Start early. Registration deadlines vary by state and may be as much as a month before an election. North Dakota is the sole state exception to the general requirement to register to become a voter. Check USAGov’s state-by-state voter registration deadlines and confirm details with the relevant election office. That page was last updated February 23, 2026.

What to do if your record is wrong or missing

  1. Confirm that you selected the correct state and entered the requested information accurately.

  2. If the result remains missing, inactive, or inconsistent with your current name or address, contact the state or local election office. Ask whether you need to register, update your record, or take another step.

  3. Ask the office to confirm the applicable deadline, polling-place location and hours, and any instructions for your circumstances. Do this before Election Day whenever possible.

Does a registration card count as ID at the polls?

A voter registration card confirms registration, but it is not required at the polls. Do not assume it replaces voter identification: accepted IDs and whether printed or electronic records count as ID vary by state, and some states require other identification. Check your state’s rules before voting. USAGov’s voter registration card guidance was last updated February 23, 2026.
