For a quick overview, open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc, then select Performance > Memory. To inspect per-module capacity and configured speed, use PowerShell’s CIM query for Win32_PhysicalMemory. These checks answer different questions: installed RAM describes the hardware, while usage and free-memory counters describe what Windows can use right now.

Check RAM capacity, speed, and usage in Task Manager

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
  2. Select Performance, then choose Memory.

The Memory page is the quickest visual snapshot of the memory Windows reports, including installed memory and current use. The fields shown can vary with the device and the information Windows receives from its firmware. For general device memory information, Microsoft Q&A also points to Start > System; the Q&A is community guidance, not formal product documentation. Microsoft Q&A: RAM information in Windows.

Get per-module capacity and configured speed with PowerShell

Use Win32_PhysicalMemory when you want module-level details rather than only a summary view. Open PowerShell and run:

Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_PhysicalMemory |
Format-Table Capacity, ConfiguredClockSpeed, Manufacturer, DeviceLocator -AutoSize

The output is raw numeric data. Capacity is each physical module’s capacity in bytes; ConfiguredClockSpeed is the configured clock speed in MHz. DeviceLocator identifies the socket or board location when Windows has that information. The speed can be zero when it is unknown, and other values may be unavailable. These fields come from SMBIOS hardware information, so their accuracy depends on the system’s firmware and manufacturer data. Microsoft Learn: Win32_PhysicalMemory.

CORSAIR Vengeance LPX DDR4 RAM 32GB (2x16GB) Up to 3200MHz CL16-20-20-38 1.35V Intel XMP AMD EXPO Computer Memory – Black (CMK32GX4M2E3200C16)
  • Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
  • Hand-sorted memory chips ensure high performance with generous overclocking headroom
  • VENGEANCE LPX is optimized for wide compatibility with the latest Intel and AMD DDR4 motherboards
  • A low-profile height of just 34mm ensures that VENGEANCE LPX even fits in most small-form-factor builds
  • A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds

Do not treat a sum of module capacities converted and rounded from bytes as an exact marketed capacity without explaining the conversion. The class reference defines the field units and source.

Get-CimInstance -ClassName Win32_OperatingSystem |
  Format-Table TotalVisibleMemorySize, FreePhysicalMemory

FreePhysicalMemory and TotalVisibleMemorySize describe memory availability as Windows reports it; they are not specifications for the physical RAM modules. Microsoft’s example demonstrates these counters in PowerShell output. Microsoft Learn: Get-CimInstance.

Why Windows memory readings can differ

Installed module capacity versus memory Windows can use

Physical module capacity and operating-system availability are different measures. Microsoft warns that Win32_ComputerSystem.TotalPhysicalMemory, expressed in bytes, may not accurately represent physical memory in some situations—for example, when BIOS uses some memory. Its documentation points to Win32_PhysicalMemory.Capacity for physical-memory values. Microsoft Learn: Win32_ComputerSystem.

Firmware and manufacturer reporting

Windows relies on hardware and firmware reporting for these values. Microsoft notes that hardware-sourced data is only as good as the information configured by manufacturers, and some values may be unavailable. A blank, zero, or surprising speed therefore does not by itself show that RAM is defective or running incorrectly. Microsoft Learn: Collecting data.

Cross-check an unexpected speed

Compare an unexpected Task Manager or PowerShell speed with the system’s BIOS/UEFI information and the computer or memory manufacturer’s specifications. Microsoft has documented a Task Manager speed-reporting issue tied to SMBIOS parsing on supported Windows Server versions; that Server-specific issue should not be assumed to apply to every consumer PC. Microsoft Support: Task Manager reports incorrect memory speed.
