Before buying memory or a drive, record your PC’s exact model, installed RAM, and storage on each drive. Windows can show what is installed and how much space is free; it cannot confirm that a component is replaceable or that a particular part will fit. Use the model-specific service manual or a compatibility tool to verify that before checkout.
Find your PC model and installed RAM
- Right-click Start and select Settings.
- Open System > About.
- Record the device model shown below the device name and the Installed RAM value under Device specifications. Note the processor and whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit if a parts maker’s requirements make those details relevant.
Microsoft’s device information guide documents this page for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Installed RAM tells you how much memory Windows reports in the computer now. It does not tell you the maximum supported memory, how many slots are free, or whether the memory is soldered and replaceable.
Check how much storage is used and free
See a storage breakdown
Go to Settings > System > Storage for a breakdown of how space is being used. Depending on the drive and Windows version, Storage settings can also show its type, capacity, and current usage. See Microsoft’s Storage settings guide.
Check free space on each drive
Open File Explorer > This PC to see the available space listed under Devices and drives. If the PC has multiple drives, use Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Storage used on other drives to review the additional drives. Keep these figures distinct in your notes: total capacity is the drive’s size, used space is what is occupied, and free space is what remains available. Record which physical drive holds Windows and which drives are additional storage; a low free-space figure on one drive does not describe the others.
Confirm whether RAM or storage can be upgraded
Use the exact model you recorded to find the manufacturer’s specifications or service manual. Check the machine itself—not merely its product family—because configurations can differ. A compatibility selector can help identify candidate parts: Crucial says its System Scanner analyzes a computer for compatible memory and storage upgrades and also offers an Upgrade Selector. Treat a tool’s result as a product-finding aid, then verify the precise computer and component specifications before buying.

For a RAM upgrade, verify
- Whether memory is soldered, replaceable, or a mixture of both.
- Memory generation/type and module form factor.
- Number of slots, how many are available, and supported capacity per slot and in total.
- Whether the computer requires or benefits from a particular matched configuration.
For a storage upgrade, verify
- Whether the computer has an available slot or bay, or whether the existing drive must be replaced.
- Supported interface/protocol and physical form factor.
- Any capacity limits documented for the exact model.
- Whether replacing the Windows drive requires data migration or reinstalling the operating system.
Windows’ RAM and storage readings describe the current setup; neither proves that the relevant part can be changed. If model-specific upgradeability or a component specification is unclear, do not infer compatibility from a connector, a free-space reading, or a generic listing.
Choose what to upgrade based on the constraint
First decide whether the problem is limited memory, insufficient free storage, or a need for more total capacity. Then compare only options confirmed for the exact PC. For memory, compare compatible type and configuration as well as capacity; for storage, compare supported interface and form factor, available installation space, and the migration work involved. There is no universal best RAM amount or drive capacity for an unspecified PC.

Keep Windows 11 requirements separate from upgrade compatibility
Microsoft lists 4 GB RAM and a 64 GB or larger storage device among the minimum requirements for Windows 11 in its system requirements. Those are operating-system eligibility thresholds, not recommendations for a comfortable workload and not evidence that a particular computer accepts a replacement or added component. Use the model’s documentation to assess hardware upgrades, and Microsoft’s PC Health Check instructions to check Windows 11 eligibility. The app can also report main-drive use and free space.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s device information page. Changing RAM or storage alone does not establish Windows 11 eligibility; check that separately.
