Use India’s official GST Portal at gst.gov.in to check a GSTIN or UIN, review your return-filing status, download your registration certificate, and inspect tax notices. A public taxpayer search works without signing in; your own certificate, return records, and account communications require portal access. Check each return by its form and tax period, and follow the deadline and instructions stated in any notice.
Check a GST registration without logging in
- Open the official GST Portal at gst.gov.in.
- Select Search Taxpayer, choose the GSTIN/UIN search option, and enter the number.
- Review the returned taxpayer profile and registration status.
The public search can show the GSTIN/UIN, legal and trade names, registration effective date, business constitution, principal place of business, cancellation date when applicable, and return-filing details. GSTN says this lookup is available before and after login; signing in may provide additional information. Public results are not a substitute for private account records.
Download your registration certificate or track an application
Get the certificate for an approved registration
Sign in, then go to Services > User Services > View/Download Certificate to download Form GST REG-06. GSTN states that the government does not issue a physical certificate; the certificate is available digitally through the portal.
Check an application that is still processing
For a registration application that has not yet resulted in an active registration, sign in and use Services > Registration > Track Application Status. Track it using the Application Reference Number (ARN), generated after a successful submission. An application’s pending status is not the same as an approved, active registration record.

Check whether a GST return was filed
- Sign in to the GST Portal.
- Open Services > Returns > Returns Dashboard.
- Select the relevant financial year and tax period, then search to display the available return tiles and filing information.
- Open the tile for the return you need and check its status. For GSTR-3B, GSTN’s manual says successful filing changes the status to Filed and provides an option to view or download the filed return.
Check the exact return form and period rather than relying on a general impression that a business is “up to date.” The forms and periods displayed depend on taxpayer type and filing frequency, so not every taxpayer sees the same tiles or deadlines. Use the portal’s period-specific information and current instructions for the relevant taxpayer category.
View or download GSTR-2B
To find the GSTR-2B statement, sign in and go to Services > Returns > Returns Dashboard > File Returns > GSTR 2B. It is available after the statement has been generated. GSTN says that, in post-login mode, downloads are available in Excel and/or JSON.
GSTR-2B is not a return that you file. GSTN describes it as a “read-only static auto-drafted ITC statement.” Treat its figures as data to reconcile against your books, then assess credit eligibility under the applicable rules; the statement alone is not a final determination that a particular input tax credit can be claimed.
Find and assess a GST tax notice
GSTN materials confirm that system-generated notices can follow certain missed filing obligations, but they do not establish one menu path that covers every notice type. After signing in, check the portal’s notices or communications area and any dashboard alerts. Open the notice itself and identify:
- the form number and issuing authority;
- the tax period and issue date;
- the response deadline; and
- the action or response requested.
The notice type and response process depend on the circumstances. For example, a GSTN functionality compilation published in February 2021 records GSTR-3A notice functionality for QRMP taxpayers who failed to file GSTR-3B by the due date. GSTN’s GSTR-1 guidance also refers to a Form 3A defaulter notice for failure to file GSTR-1 by its due date. The 2021 compilation is a historical implementation record, not a source for current deadlines. A notice is not by itself proof that the underlying tax position is correct: compare it with the relevant returns and records, and consult a qualified tax professional if the matter is disputed or consequential. Do not let an investigation delay a response past the notice’s deadline.
What to check when portal access fails or a status looks unexpected
If you cannot log in, use the public Search Taxpayer lookup first to see the registration status. GSTN’s troubleshooting guidance distinguishes active, cancelled, and inactive statuses. If the record is active but login still fails, GSTN suggests raising a support ticket; if the status is inactive, contact the jurisdictional officer for guidance. For a cancelled status, seek assistance rather than treating the record as active.

Understand which status you are looking at
| Record or status | What it tells you | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Public registration record | The displayed registration state and public profile for a GSTIN/UIN. | It does not expose every private account record. |
| ARN-tracked application | Progress of a submitted registration application. | A pending application is not an approved active registration. |
| Return status | Whether the specific form and tax period were filed; for GSTR-3B, GSTN identifies “Filed” as the post-filing status. | It does not show that every other period or return form has been filed. |
| GSTR-2B statement | Auto-drafted, read-only ITC information for reconciliation. | It is not a filed return or a final decision on credit eligibility. |
| Tax notice | The issue, period, deadline, and requested action stated in that communication. | Its existence alone does not prove the underlying tax position is correct. |
Portal labels, notice routes, forms, filing frequencies, and deadlines can change. Use the live GST Portal and the current instructions applicable to the taxpayer and period when taking action.
