Google’s current instructions do not confirm that Chromebooks display the exact words “End of Life” in Settings. To check when yours is due to receive its last update, open Settings → About ChromeOS → Additional details → Update schedule. The date is specific to your Chromebook model—not a universal deadline based on when you bought it.
Where to find your Chromebook’s update schedule
- Open Settings on your Chromebook.
- Select About ChromeOS.
- Open Additional details.
- Look for Update schedule. Google says this section shows when the device will receive its last update. Google Chromebook Help
The wording shown on a device may be that it will get automatic updates until a specified date. Google’s current help describes the date as the device’s last update date; it does not establish that a separate “End of Life” label is present across current devices or ChromeOS channels.
What the last update date means
Google’s current policy is to provide ChromeOS devices with 10 years of updates, and its support list gives dates for individual models. That policy figure does not tell you how much support remains for a Chromebook you already own: check the device’s Update schedule and the model-specific listing. A purchase date alone is not a reliable way to determine the remaining period. Google Chrome Enterprise Help: Auto Update policy
What changes after the final update
After the final update, the Chromebook no longer receives ChromeOS or browser updates, including security updates, bug fixes, and new features. Some apps that depend on a newer version of ChromeOS or the browser may also stop working or lose support. Google says owners can continue using the device or upgrade to another Chromebook. Extended updates for some older Chromebooks
Some eligible Chromebooks released before 2021 can receive extended updates for a total of 10 years from the platform’s release. This is not the same feature set as standard updates: extended updates exclude Android apps and Google Play Store support. Some models also require the owner to opt in, so check the guidance for the specific device before choosing this option. Google Chromebook Help: Extended updates
End of Sale is not the same as the last update date
End of Sale is controlled by the device manufacturer; it does not determine whether Google will provide updates. As Google Chromebook Help puts it: “Important: The ‘End of Sale’ date is controlled by the device manufacturer and isn’t related to a device’s eligibility for Google updates.” Google Chromebook Help
