To check for an available update, open Settings > System > Software updates and follow the instructions shown on your device.
Find the Android security patch date
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap About phone or About tablet.
- Tap Android version.
- Read the value beside Android security update.
Google documents this route in its Android version and update instructions. Menu names and locations can differ by manufacturer and Android version.
Know which update details you are reading
The Android version page can show several separate details. If you are describing your device’s status to support staff, record the relevant values individually rather than treating them as one update date.
- Android version: The installed Android release.
- Android security update: The security patch level date.
- Google Play system update: A separate system-update status and date; it is not the Android security update field.
- Build number: Identifies the installed software build.
Check whether an update is available
- Open Settings.
- Tap System > Software updates. Depending on the device, the option may instead be labelled Software updates or System update; Pixel devices use the update screen to show status.
- Review the status and follow the on-screen steps if an update is offered. If you dismissed an update notification or the device was offline, you can check manually in Settings.
On some supported layouts, security and Google Play system updates are also available at Settings > Security and privacy > System and updates. Select Security update or Google Play system update. Not all manufacturers arrange these settings the same way.

Prepare for installation and handle a stalled download
- Connect to Wi-Fi and charge the device to at least 75% before starting, as Google recommends.
- Keep following the prompts on the update screen. A downloaded update may need a restart or additional installation time before it becomes active.
- On Pixel phones and Pixel Tablet, downloaded Android updates install in the background and activate at the next restart. Many other Android phones and tablets restart automatically during installation, with the update active when installation finishes.
- If a download does not finish, Google says the device automatically retries over the next few days and sends a notification when it retries.
Interpret an older-looking patch date carefully
The Android security update date corresponds to a patch level associated with a set of fixes in the Android Security Bulletin. It is not the same as the Android version or Google Play system update date. AOSP bulletins can list more than one patch level, so the date alone is not a universal verdict about whether a device has every applicable fix.
For example, the June 2026 Android Security Bulletin explains that level 2026-06-01 addresses issues associated with that level, while 2026-06-05 addresses that level and previous levels. Bulletins cover fixes from AOSP, the upstream Linux kernel, and SoC manufacturers; the applicable fixes can depend on the device.

The AOSP Android Security Bulletins index lists its October 2026 bulletin as published October 5, 2026, with patch levels 2026-10-01 and 2026-10-05. That publication date does not mean every Android device should already display either level: rollout timing varies.

Update availability depends on the device, manufacturer, and mobile carrier. Older devices may not support a newer Android version, and a bulletin’s publication does not establish that a particular handset has received the update. Check the update screen on the device, then contact its manufacturer or carrier for the schedule that applies to its exact model and service region. The relevant comparison is the device’s displayed patch level alongside its Android version, model, applicable bulletin level, and manufacturer or carrier support schedule—not a single cutoff date for all Android devices.
