To find out which RAM your computer supports, identify the exact computer model—or the motherboard model in a custom desktop—and check its official specifications or service manual. Confirm the DDR generation, DIMM or SO-DIMM form factor, capacity limits, slot configuration, and supported speed. Then check the processor’s memory specifications too: the system’s practical limits depend on both the processor and the computer or motherboard.
1. Identify your computer or motherboard model
Start with the exact model, not just the brand or processor family. Look for the model name on the computer’s label, in its system information, or on the manufacturer’s support page. For a custom desktop, identify the motherboard model. A system’s supported RAM type, capacity, and speed are model-specific; there is no universal maximum that applies to all PCs.
2. Check the system or motherboard specifications
Open the official support page, specifications, or service and upgrade manual for that exact model. Look for the memory section. For example, MSI advises checking memory type, slots, and maximum capacity before upgrading, while HP recommends checking memory type, speed, maximum capacity, and slot configuration.
- DDR generation: Find the supported generation, such as DDR4 or DDR5. DDR generations are not interchangeable; match the module to the system’s specified memory type and slot.
- Form factor: Check whether the system takes desktop DIMMs or smaller laptop SO-DIMMs. Do not choose a module based only on its DDR generation.
- Capacity and slot configuration: Check the maximum supported total capacity, number of slots, and any limits on capacity per slot or module arrangement stated in the manual.
- Supported speed: Note the memory data rates the system supports. A module’s advertised speed does not by itself establish the speed at which the computer will run it.
3. Check the processor’s memory limits
Find the exact processor model and consult its manufacturer’s specifications as well. Intel’s processor documentation lists supported memory type, maximum memory size and speed, memory channels, and ECC support. Intel also recommends checking the motherboard manual for compatibility with a particular module: How to find Intel processor memory specifications.

- Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
- Hand-sorted memory chips ensure high performance with generous overclocking headroom
- VENGEANCE LPX is optimized for wide compatibility with the latest Intel and AMD DDR4 motherboards
- A low-profile height of just 34mm ensures that VENGEANCE LPX even fits in most small-form-factor builds
- A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds
Use both sets of specifications when assessing a proposed upgrade. A processor’s capabilities alone do not confirm that a particular laptop, prebuilt PC, or motherboard supports a given memory configuration. For those systems, rely on the exact model’s documentation rather than assumptions based on the processor family.
4. Look for a memory support list or QVL
Some motherboard makers publish a memory support report or Qualified Vendor List (QVL) showing modules tested for particular configurations. Search the support page for the exact motherboard model. MSI explains how to check memory support specifications and reports; ASUS explains how to query its CPU and memory QVLs.

A matching part number on a QVL is evidence that the manufacturer tested that module in the listed configuration. It is not an exhaustive list of every module that may work. MSI notes that an unlisted module is not necessarily incompatible; it means the manufacturer has not provided that same official testing and compatibility assurance.
5. Compare the specifications before buying
Compare the candidate kit with the system and processor documentation. Check all of these details, including the module arrangement and exact part number where a support list is available:

For a laptop or prebuilt PC, use the exact model’s service documentation or compatibility lookup instead of treating a compatible processor as proof that a kit will fit. The speed printed on a memory kit may be higher than its default operating speed. The result depends on the system’s supported limits, the module’s SPD settings, and the BIOS/UEFI memory profile. Intel explains that SPD settings can select a lower default frequency than a module’s marketed speed in its guide to configuring RAM frequency to match Intel processor specifications.

If installed memory is running below the kit’s advertised speed, check that the modules are in the slots specified by the motherboard manual, then review the BIOS/UEFI memory profile and confirm the processor and motherboard limits. Do not assume that enabling a profile will make a speed supported when the system specifications do not support it.
