On your iPhone, open Settings > General > About and find the software version entry. That is Apple’s direct way to check which iOS version is installed; you do not need to update the phone or connect it to a computer.
Check the iOS version in Settings
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap General.
- Tap About.
- Find the software version entry on the About page. Apple identifies this as the iOS version. Apple’s instructions for finding your software version cover this route.
Menu labels may be localized, and their presentation can vary between iOS releases. Use the About page’s software version entry rather than trying to infer the installed version from the iPhone model.

Check the version and look for an update
Open Settings > General > Software Update. Apple says this screen shows the installed iOS version and whether an update is available. It is useful when you want to check both facts in one place; for just the version, About is the shorter route. See Apple’s iPhone and iPad update instructions.
If you choose to update
Back up your iPhone, connect it to Wi-Fi and power, then open Settings > General > Software Update and follow the on-screen steps. The update offered depends on your iPhone’s compatibility; not every model can install every iOS release. Apple’s iOS 26 compatibility guide lists the models compatible with that release.

Find the version using a computer
If you cannot navigate Settings directly, a connected computer can show the software version once it recognizes the iPhone. Which app to use depends on the computer:
- Mac with macOS Catalina or later: Find the iPhone in Finder.
- Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier: Find it in iTunes.
- Windows PC: Find it in iTunes or Apple Devices.
Open the device’s General or Summary tab and look for the software version. Apple describes this method alongside the on-device steps in its software-version instructions. It requires a computer that recognizes the connected iPhone.
