On Windows, open System Information by pressing Windows key + R, entering msinfo32, and pressing Enter; read the Processor field. You can also find it in Task Manager under Performance > CPU. On Linux, run lscpu | grep "Model name" in a terminal. On an Intel-based Mac, choose Apple menu > About This Mac. These built-in checks show the processor name without requiring a separate app.
Find the processor name in Windows
Use either of these built-in options to see the installed processor:

Check an Intel-based Mac
Select Apple menu > About This Mac and look in the Overview for the processor information. Intel’s instructions apply to Intel-based Macs; they should not be assumed to identify a processor on every Mac.
Read the full model name and number
Record the complete name shown by the operating system, not just the family label such as “Core i5” or “Core i7.” The full model number is needed to distinguish processors within a family and to look up specifications. Enter that number on Intel’s processor identification page to find further information.

Interpret the generation or series carefully
Intel Core naming conventions have changed, so the digits do not mean the same thing across every processor name.
Older Core i3, i5, i7, and i9 names
For models using names such as Core i7-13700K, Intel says the digit or digits immediately following the family label indicate the generation. In that example, “13” identifies a 13th-generation processor. See Intel’s guide to finding the generation.

Newer Core series names
Do not apply the older generation rule to every newer Core name. In Intel’s newer naming scheme, the SKU number begins with a number that indicates the series: Intel gives Core 7 processor 150U as a Series 1 example and Core 7 processor 250H as a Series 2 example. Intel explains the convention in its Core processor series naming guide.

You do not need to download software just to identify the basic processor model. Intel also offers the Windows Processor Identification Utility for additional information, including cores, threads, frequencies, technologies, and system details. Its supported processors and Windows versions are limited, and initial installation requires internet access, so check Intel’s current utility page before installing it for a particular system.
