Start with the sender name or number shown in the message, but treat it as a clue—not proof. To confirm a company sent an SMS, find its contact details independently, such as on a bill or its official website, and ask through that channel. Do not use links or phone numbers in a suspicious text to verify it.
Check the sender and the context
Look at the conversation header and note what appears: a business name, an alphanumeric sender ID, a short code, or an ordinary phone number. A sender ID is a name displayed in place of a sending number. It can help you recognize a business, but sender IDs are not supported everywhere and their protections vary by location.
Ask whether the message fits something you recently did: placed an order, requested a login code, booked an appointment, or contacted a company. Unexpected urgency, requests for payment or credentials, and unfamiliar links are reasons to be cautious. A sender label alone does not establish that a message is genuine, and there is no universal public directory that conclusively maps every sender ID or number to a company.

Verify the company through a separate channel
- Find contact details independently. Use a bill, payment card, or the company’s official website—not a link, callback number, or other contact detail in the questionable text.
- Ask the company directly. Give its support team the sender label or number, the time you received the text, and relevant message details. Avoid forwarding sensitive information such as passwords or one-time codes.
- Act on the message only after checking. If the company cannot confirm it, do not follow its link, share personal details, or make a payment through the text.
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission recommends using a phone number or website you already know is real to check an unexpected message: FTC guidance on recognizing and reporting spam texts.

What sender IDs mean in different places
Rules and visual indicators are local, so a sender ID that has added protections in one country may not have the same meaning elsewhere.
- Australia: The Australian Communications and Media Authority says changes to the SMS Sender ID Register commenced on 1 July 2026. Business messages using unregistered sender IDs may be labelled “Unverified.” ACMA describes a sender ID as “the branded name at the top of text messages from a business or organisation.” Even with these changes, verify suspicious messages using contact details found independently. - Hong Kong: Under the Office of the Communications Authority’s SMS Sender Registration Scheme, a
#prefix in an SMS Sender ID indicates a registered sender. OFCA still advises vigilance whether or not the prefix appears. See OFCA’s SMS Sender Registration Scheme guidance. - United Kingdom and cross-border messages: The National Cyber Security Centre notes that sender IDs are not supported globally. Local sender-ID arrangements should not be treated as a worldwide guarantee. See NCSC guidance on SMS sender IDs.
Report or block a suspicious message
Reporting and blocking are different: a report shares information with an app or provider, while blocking or filtering aims to reduce future messages. Neither action identifies the company behind a sender label.

On iPhone
Apple provides an option to report unknown spam, but reporting availability for SMS, MMS, or RCS depends on the carrier and region. Apple says reporting does not prevent that sender from sending more messages; block the contact separately if you want to stop messages from it. In Google Messages on Android
Google Messages’ “Report spam” action blocks the sender and moves the conversation to “Spam & blocked.” See Google Messages’ instructions for blocking and reporting spam.

Use the reporting route for your country
- India: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India directs users to report unsolicited commercial communications to their telecom provider, including by texting 1909. This short code is part of India’s process; it is not a global reporting number. See TRAI’s UCC complaint and reporting guidance.
- Australia: ACMA points scam-message recipients to Scamwatch. If money or personal information has been stolen, ACMA advises contacting your bank and phone company immediately; see the ACMA scams guidance.
