What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
On a working Mac Studio, open Apple menu > About This Mac and note the model name and chip. To confirm its full port list, match its model identifier to Apple’s Mac Studio identification guide, then open the corresponding Tech Specs page. This matters because front ports differ between Max and Ultra configurations, and a USB-C-shaped connector is not necessarily Thunderbolt.
Find your Mac Studio’s model and chip
- Open About This Mac: Choose Apple menu > About This Mac. Apple Support calls this the easiest way to find your Mac’s model name. Record the model name and chip shown.
- Find the model identifier: Compare your model with Apple’s Mac Studio identification guide. The identifier distinguishes generations and chip configurations.
- Open the matching specifications: Find that model’s Apple Tech Specs page and check Connections and Expansion. Use the exact model rather than assuming that all Mac Studios have the same ports.
If the Mac is unavailable or will not start fully, begin with Apple’s guidance for finding your Mac’s model name and serial number. The identification guide links to that fallback information.
Identify the front ports by model

| 2026 | M5 Ultra | Mac17,15 | Two Thunderbolt 5 ports |
| 2025 | M4 Max | Mac16,9 | Two USB-C ports |
| 2025 | M3 Ultra | Mac15,14 | Two Thunderbolt 5 ports |
| 2023 | M2 Max | Mac14,13 | Two USB-C ports |
| 2023 | M2 Ultra | Mac14,14 | Two Thunderbolt 4 ports |
| 2022 | M1 Max | Mac13,1 | Two USB-C ports |
| 2022 | M1 Ultra | Mac13,2 | Two Thunderbolt 4 ports |
The 2026 entries and identifiers are from Apple’s identification guide as accessed October 4, 2026. For their rear-port details and speeds, consult the current Tech Specs page linked from Apple’s guide; do not infer them from older models.

USB-C shape does not confirm Thunderbolt
USB-C describes a connector shape; Thunderbolt identifies an interface capability. Apple treats USB-C, Thunderbolt 4 and Thunderbolt 5 as distinct port categories, so check the model’s Tech Specs and the markings beside the physical ports before choosing a cable or planning a connection.
This distinction affects what a port can do. Apple says the front USB-C ports on M1 Max and M2 Max Mac Studio models are for external USB-C devices; for external displays, use rear ports marked with the Thunderbolt symbol. The front Thunderbolt 4 ports on M1 Ultra and M2 Ultra models can connect displays or Thunderbolt devices. Apple also confirms that the M3 Ultra’s front Thunderbolt 5 ports support displays and devices.

Match the port to the device you want to connect
- For an external display, verify that the specific port supports display connections and check the display’s cable requirements. Do not assume a front USB-C port is a Thunderbolt display connection.
- For a Thunderbolt peripheral or dock, confirm both the Mac port’s Thunderbolt generation and the cable or device requirements in the relevant specifications.
- If a device’s connector does not fit an available port, Apple’s port guidance recommends using an appropriate adapter. An adapter solves a connector mismatch; it does not by itself establish that the connection has the capability or bandwidth you need.
