To check whether an AI feature works on your device, verify that specific feature against your exact device model and software version, then check its settings and availability in your region and language. A feature being available—or an NPU showing activity—does not by itself prove that every part of its processing happens on your phone or PC.
What to verify before you check
There is no universal consumer indicator that identifies where every AI feature is processed. Treat these as separate questions: Is the feature supported on this model? Is it enabled and ready to use? Is the NPU active while it runs? Is all processing local? Evidence for one does not automatically answer the others.
- Name the feature. Check the specific function you intend to use, rather than relying on a broad label such as “AI PC” or an AI assistant brand.
- Record your device and software. Find the exact model and operating-system version or build. For a PC, note the processor and NPU specifications; for a phone, check the model and available storage.
- Check the platform’s current official requirements. Confirm hardware, minimum software, language, country or region, and any storage requirements for that feature.
- Check its state. Look in the relevant settings or app to see whether the feature is enabled, its on-device model has downloaded, and any required permissions or preferences are in place.
- Assess processing evidence carefully. A platform may document on-device processing, or a system monitor may show NPU use. Neither observation alone proves that every processing stage stays on the device.
Check AI features on a Windows PC
Confirm the exact feature and hardware
Find your PC’s model and processor details in its system information or manufacturer documentation, then compare them with the current requirements for the named Windows feature. Microsoft describes Copilot+ PCs as Windows 11 devices with a high-performance NPU capable of more than 40 TOPS, and says many new Windows AI features require an NPU capable of 40+ TOPS. That threshold is not a universal requirement for every AI function. Check Microsoft’s Copilot+ PCs documentation for the feature and current supported-device information.
See whether the NPU is active
Open Task Manager and inspect NPU resource usage while the feature is running. On a device with an NPU, activity there is evidence that a process is using that hardware during your observation. It is not a complete processing audit: it does not establish that all stages of the feature run locally.

Check a feature-specific Windows version requirement
Some requirements apply only to a particular API or feature. For example, Microsoft’s Phi Silica troubleshooting guidance specifies Windows 11 version 25H2, build 10.0.26200.7309 or later for the Copilot+ PC procedure. To check your version, type winver in Start. Do not apply that Phi Silica requirement to unrelated Windows AI features; consult the relevant Phi Silica troubleshooting guidance.
Check Apple Intelligence on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Vision Pro, or Apple Watch
Match your model and software
Apple’s cited compatibility guidance lists iPhone 15 Pro models and iPhone 16 models or later; iPad mini (A17 Pro) and iPad models with M1 or later; Mac computers with Apple silicon; and Apple Vision Pro. It also covers compatible Apple Watch devices paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone. The page lists minimum releases of iOS 18.1, iPadOS 18.1, macOS Sequoia 15.1, visionOS 2.4, and watchOS 11, respectively. Check storage, language, and settings
Apple lists 7 GB of device storage for Apple Intelligence, except on Apple Watch. The device language and Siri language must match a supported language. To enable it, open Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri. Apple says on-device models begin downloading after the software is updated, and download time varies. Availability also varies by platform, language, and region.
Apple’s support page refers readers to OpenAI for ChatGPT availability. Apple Intelligence being enabled does not establish that every integrated or connected service processes requests locally.

Check Gemini Intelligence on an Android phone
Start with Google’s current eligibility information for the exact phone and feature. The cited Android Help page on Gemini Intelligence says features can vary by country, language, and device. For the phone tier described on that page, Google lists 12 GB or more of RAM, a qualified system-on-chip, advanced on-device AI processing capabilities, the latest media processing capabilities, and software performance benchmarks. These are conditions for that documented phone tier, not a universal minimum for Android AI.
Check the settings and permissions required by the particular feature. Google notes that individual features may require app permissions, location settings, or other system preferences. Meeting listed hardware requirements does not by itself show that a feature is enabled or available to your account, region, or language.

How to compare two devices fairly
When deciding whether one phone or PC supports a particular AI function better than another, compare the same named feature on both devices. Use these checks instead of an undifferentiated “AI-ready” label:
- Feature: Is the exact function supported?
- Hardware: What are the model, processor, NPU capability where relevant, memory, and available storage?
- Software and setup: Does the device meet the required OS release or build, and is the feature enabled with its model downloaded?
- Processing evidence: Does official documentation describe on-device processing, and is there observed NPU activity? Keep both claims distinct from proof that all work is local.
- Availability: Is it supported for the device’s country or region and language?
- Controls and dependencies: Are permissions, system preferences, account access, or an external service required?
What a check can—and cannot—tell you
Official requirements can establish that a device is eligible for a particular feature under stated conditions. Settings can show whether it is enabled, and a system monitor can show hardware activity at the time you check. Those are useful but different kinds of evidence. Unless the platform documents the full processing path, do not infer that a feature runs entirely on-device from its presence, its “AI” branding, or NPU usage alone.

Requirements and availability change with software releases. Recheck the relevant Microsoft, Apple, or Google page when a major platform update arrives or when you need to confirm a specific device, language, or region.
