Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →To find out whether zram helps your Linux system, compare the same representative workload with zram enabled and disabled under otherwise similar conditions. Measure the task’s time, throughput, or latency alongside CPU use, memory pressure, swap activity, and zram’s actual memory allocation. A good compression ratio shows that zram is compressing data; it does not, by itself, show that your workload got faster.
What to measure in a zram comparison
zram is a compressed block device in RAM. It trades CPU work for reduced memory use and may reduce access to slower backing swap. Whether that trade helps depends on the workload, available CPU capacity, memory pressure, and swap configuration. The Linux kernel documents zram’s mechanism and statistics, but does not prescribe a universal benchmark protocol or a general performance gain. Linux kernel zram documentation
Track these measures for each run:
- Workload outcome: elapsed time, throughput, latency, responsiveness, or whether the task completes under a fixed memory limit.
- CPU cost: whether CPU use rises while zram compresses and decompresses pages.
- Memory pressure and swap activity: whether the test encounters reclaim or backing-swap I/O that zram could plausibly reduce.
- zram allocation: the amount of memory the device actually uses, not just the compressed payload size.
Set up a fair test
Choose a representative workload
Use a repeatable task related to the slowdown or memory pressure you want to address, such as a build, dataset operation, or application workload. Keep its input and software version fixed. Choose the outcome that matters before testing; do not substitute a compression ratio for task performance.
Record the configuration
For each condition, note the kernel and distribution, CPU and RAM, zram device and size, compression algorithm, active swap devices and priorities, swappiness, zswap state, workload version and input, power mode, and concurrent system load. Keep these conditions stable. If you are testing the effect of zram itself, change only whether it is enabled.

Use the active device’s number in place of N when reading its statistics under /sys/block/zramN/. The kernel documents the mm_stat fields described below. If zram writeback is configured, also account for backing-device activity reported in /sys/block/zramN/bd_stat. Availability and configuration of writeback can differ by system. Run repeated trials
Run the same workload with zram enabled and disabled, then repeat the trials enough to see ordinary run-to-run variation. Keep background activity and other settings as consistent as possible. If practical, alternate or randomize the order so that thermal changes or background-load drift do not consistently favor one condition.

orig_data_size: the uncompressed size of data represented in zram.compr_data_size: the size of the compressed data.mem_used_total: memory actually allocated for the device, including allocator fragmentation and metadata overhead.
Use mem_used_total when judging zram’s RAM cost. compr_data_size is useful for understanding compression, but it does not include all the memory consumed by the device. The kernel defines these as accounting fields, not as evidence of a performance improvement. Linux kernel zram documentation
Interpret the result in context
- The workload improves and CPU cost is acceptable: zram appears useful for this workload and configuration. Confirm the result across repeated trials.
- Compression is effective but the task is not faster: zram is saving memory, but that alone has not produced a measurable task improvement. Consider whether the workload had memory pressure or backing-swap activity to avoid.
- The task slows while CPU use rises: compression overhead may be outweighing memory or I/O benefits. Check repeatability and other sources of system load before attributing the slowdown to zram.
- There was little memory pressure or swap activity: the test may not have given zram much opportunity to avoid costly backing swap, so a small or absent benefit is plausible.
Do not report an expected percentage speedup: the available kernel documentation defines statistics and behavior, not a general benchmark result. Judge the configuration by the workload outcome, CPU cost, actual zram allocation, and memory or backing-swap activity together.

Keep swap settings and zswap in view
Hold swappiness constant
The kernel defines vm.swappiness as a relative-cost control from 0 to 200. Its documented default is 60: lower values treat swapping as more expensive, while higher values treat it as cheaper. The kernel says values above 100 can be considered for in-memory swap such as zram, but the optimal value depends on workload and requires experimentation. Keep swappiness unchanged in an enabled-versus-disabled zram test unless swappiness itself is the variable being tested. Linux kernel VM sysctl documentation
Check for zswap
zswap is a separate compressed-swap mechanism: it keeps a compressed cache of pages being swapped out and trades CPU cycles for potentially reduced swap I/O. Check whether it is active when interpreting results, since its behavior can affect a test intended to isolate zram. Linux kernel zswap documentation

Useful interfaces
The kernel documentation points to zramctl, supplied by util-linux, as a zram management utility. For the documented per-device accounting fields, use the kernel’s sysfs statistics, especially mm_stat and, when writeback is configured, bd_stat. Linux kernel zram documentation
