To check current Visual Studio IDE access, sign in with the account the subscription was assigned to and verify the active subscription in the Visual Studio Subscriptions portal. Whether it can be transferred depends on how it was acquired: volume-license subscriptions may be reassigned by an organization administrator, retail subscriptions require a customer-service transfer, and complimentary or Not For Resale subscriptions cannot be transferred.
How to verify that your Visual Studio subscription is assigned to you
- Check the portal. Open the Visual Studio Subscriptions portal with the email account you believe owns the subscription. If you have more than one subscription or email address, sign out and try the account associated with the subscription.
- Check Visual Studio. Launch the IDE and sign in with that same account. Review the account settings to confirm Visual Studio recognizes the subscription. Microsoft explains that “Visual Studio authenticates access to the IDE through the account you sign in with.” Microsoft Learn: Access and authenticate the Visual Studio IDE by signing in.
- Resolve a mismatch. Confirm the assigned email address and subscription status in the portal. If the subscription comes from work or school, ask its administrator to check your assignment and access settings. If the record is still unclear, contact Microsoft Visual Studio subscription support.
A recognized active subscription and successful sign-in indicate that the account currently has subscription-based IDE access. They do not, by themselves, prove that a third-party seller procured the subscription legitimately or that you have the right to resell it.
Can a Visual Studio subscription be transferred?
Microsoft’s transfer guidance distinguishes subscriptions by acquisition channel. A subscription is assigned to a named individual; it must not be shared. Transfer or reassignment therefore depends on the subscription type and its applicable terms, not simply on possession of a key.
| Subscription type | Who handles reassignment or transfer? | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Volume licensing | The organization’s administrator | Ask the administrator to reassign the subscription within the organization. |
| Retail | Microsoft customer service, contacted by an administrator | Ask the administrator to contact customer service about transferring the subscription. |
| Complimentary or Not For Resale | Transfer is not permitted | Do not treat the subscription as transferable. |
These are channel-specific subscription rules; moving Azure billing ownership or migrating an organizational agreement is not the same as transferring an individual IDE subscription. Agreement migration is an administrator process involving subscriber assignments and new subscription identifiers. See Microsoft’s subscription transfer guidance and guidance on migrating subscriptions.

Does a product key prove the license is genuine?
No. A key alone does not show that a current Visual Studio IDE subscription is active, assigned to you, or transferable. Microsoft says Visual Studio 2026 uses subscription sign-in and does not require a product key. Keys may be available for certain other products and earlier Visual Studio versions, but they are not a substitute for checking the assigned account and subscription record. What to check if access changes or expires
Subscription changes or expiration can affect access and validation conditions. Check the subscription portal for the current status and benefits. If you rely on keys for older Visual Studio versions, preserve any relevant keys before the subscription expires; do not assume that current IDE access works the same way as access to an earlier version. See Microsoft’s documentation on subscription benefits and management and Visual Studio 2026 subscription benefits.

How to assess a third-party offer
- Ask which subscription type and purchase channel are involved: volume licensing, retail, or complimentary/Not For Resale.
- Have the organization administrator or Microsoft confirm the current assignment and applicable transfer process.
- Do not rely on a seller’s assurance, a product key, or a successful sign-in alone as proof that a resale offer is valid or that resale is allowed.
Microsoft’s published guidance does not provide one universal verification procedure for every resale offer or jurisdiction. For a specific offer, confirm its subscription type, assignment, purchase channel, and terms directly with Microsoft or the organization administrator.
