To check whether a TP-Link router has the latest firmware, first identify its exact model and hardware version, then check for updates in the router’s web interface or the Tether app if supported. If neither offers an online check, compare the installed version with the download listed for that model, hardware revision, and purchase region on TP-Link’s official support page.
Find the installed firmware and hardware versions

Connect to your router and open its web management interface. TP-Link commonly uses tplinkwifi.net; if it does not work, use the address and login instructions in your router’s manual.

Look for the firmware version in the management interface. TP-Link says it may appear at the bottom of the interface or in the Firmware Upgrade section. The hardware version may also be shown there.

Check the label on the router for the model and hardware revision. The revision may be written as a Ver: value. Record the complete model name and revision before looking for downloads.

Check for an update in the router interface
On supported routers, open the Update notice or Firmware Upgrade / Online Upgrade page and look for an online check. Some interfaces include a CHECK FOR UPGRADES button. The precise menu names and availability vary by model and interface version; not every TP-Link router can check online. TP-Link describes the differences between Cloud-enabled routers and models that require manual updating in its router firmware update guide.
If the interface reports a newer version, review its release notes before choosing whether to install it. Seeing an update does not require you to install it immediately.

Check with the Tether app, if your router supports it
Connect your phone to the router’s Wi-Fi, open TP-Link Tether, and look for More > System > Firmware Update. The path and availability depend on the router and app version. If you do not see a firmware option, use the web interface or check the model’s support page instead. TP-Link documents the supported app route in its firmware update guide.

Select the hardware version matching the router’s label or interface.

Use the support listing for the region where the router was purchased. TP-Link warns that firmware for different regions may not be interchangeable.

Compare the installed version with the firmware offered for that hardware revision and read the release notes. The available version can differ by model, revision, and region, and listings can change.

Do not assume a version is the latest based only on a similar model name or a result for another country. TP-Link’s firmware guide explains the regional and hardware-version checks; its version lookup guide describes where to find the installed firmware and hardware version.

Checking tells you which version is installed and whether a newer one is offered; installing is a separate decision. Read the release notes first, because some updates may reset router settings. If you proceed, keep the router powered on and its Ethernet connection in place until the upgrade finishes and the router reboots. TP-Link’s upgrade instructions include this precaution, and the Archer AX12/AX17/AX18 manual states: “Do NOT turn off the router during the firmware upgrade.” That menu example and wording apply to those models’ guide, not necessarily every TP-Link interface.
