If by “performance upgrade” you mean adding storage while keeping PS5 games playable, check that your console’s system software is up to date and that the M.2 NVMe SSD meets Sony’s requirements. This is a storage expansion—not a guaranteed frame-rate or loading-speed boost. If you meant a system software update, the same update menu is listed below.
First, clarify which upgrade you mean
Sony’s current support guidance describes adding an M.2 SSD to expand PS5 storage. Compatible PS5 and PS4 games can be stored and launched from that drive, but Sony does not promise that games will perform identically to those on the console’s internal SSD. Sony cautions that “Not all games are necessarily playable with the exact same performance provided by the PS5 console’s internal Ultra-High Speed SSD, even where the M.2 SSD device’s sequential read speed is faster than 5500MB/s.” See Sony’s M.2 SSD requirements and installation guide.
If you mean installing the latest PS5 system software rather than expanding storage, use Sony’s system software update guide. Sony instructs users to update the console before installing an M.2 SSD.
Check for a PS5 system software update
- On the PS5, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- If Update Available appears, select Update System Software and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Once the update is complete, return to the M.2 SSD compatibility checks below before buying or installing a drive.
The available version can change, so use Sony’s live update instructions if the console reports an error or you need recovery steps.

Check whether an M.2 SSD meets Sony’s requirements
Use the drive manufacturer’s current specification sheet—not just a retailer’s headline—to verify the interface, capacity, form factor, installed cooling dimensions, and read speed. Sony says it cannot guarantee that every drive meeting the listed specifications will work; contact the drive manufacturer if a specification is unclear.
- Interface: PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD, Key M. M.2 SATA drives are not supported.
- Capacity: 250 GB to 8 TB.
- Length: 30, 42, 60, 80, or 110 mm, commonly labeled 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, or 22110.
- Width and thickness: No more than 25 mm wide and 11.25 mm thick with the cooling structure installed. Sony also specifies clearance limits above and below the board, so check the detailed dimensions in its compatibility guide.
- Sequential read speed: Sony recommends 5,500 MB/s or faster. This is a recommendation, not a guarantee of identical performance to the PS5’s internal SSD.
- Cooling: An effective cooling structure, such as a heatsink and heat-transfer sheet, is required. Check dimensions with the cooling structure attached; a drive’s bare dimensions do not establish fit. Avoid adding a second heatsink over one already integrated into the drive.

Know what installation involves
Installation instructions differ by PS5 model group, so identify the model and follow the matching section of Sony’s installation guide rather than applying one set of steps to every console.

- Work at a well-lit table and have a #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver ready; a small flashlight is optional.
- Before handling the drive or console internals, touch a grounded metal object to discharge static.
- Do not power on or play the console with its cover off.
- On first use, the PS5 presents a formatting guide. Formatting erases all data on the M.2 SSD, so back up or move anything you need from that drive beforehand.
What to do if a game has problems
If a game has issues when launched from M.2 storage, Sony recommends moving it to the console’s internal storage. You can move an M.2 SSD to another PS5; to access its data on the new console, sign into the same account on both consoles. Follow Sony’s M.2 SSD guidance for details.
