To check whether your PC uses DDR4 or DDR5, look for an explicit memory-type reading in a hardware-information utility. Do not infer the generation from installed capacity or reported speed. For a cross-check, identify your exact PC configuration and, where available, the part number of each installed memory module.
Check the reported memory type
A hardware-information utility can show the memory type currently reported by the system. The CPU-Z information page describes its Memory tab as showing the DRAM type, such as DDR4 or DDR5, alongside current memory frequency. The cited description is from a third-party page, not CPU-Z’s official documentation, so verify an unclear or conflicting result against your PC or module specifications. CPU-Z information
Memory type and frequency are separate details. Frequency alone is not a reliable way to decide whether RAM is DDR4 or DDR5.
Find your exact PC model in Windows
Windows Settings can help you identify the computer and its installed memory amount, which you can then use to find the right manufacturer specification. Microsoft’s About instructions cover model, processor type, and installed RAM amount; they do not promise a DDR-generation field.

- Select System, then About.
- Note the device model, processor type, and installed RAM amount. Use the exact model or configuration identifier when checking the manufacturer’s specifications.
Installed capacity tells you how much RAM is present, not whether it is DDR4 or DDR5. Microsoft: Find information about your Windows device
Use SPD information to identify an individual module
If you need to check a particular stick, look for its SPD details in a hardware-information utility. SPD information can include the module manufacturer and part number. Search the part number in the module maker’s specifications, or compare it with the documentation for your PC. Some systems may not expose removable-module details.

The Memory tab’s type reading describes current system memory; SPD details help identify individual modules. If they appear inconsistent, use the exact module part number and system configuration to investigate rather than relying on frequency alone. CPU-Z information
Confirm the result against the exact system configuration
Look up the exact PC model and configuration, or the motherboard model for a custom-built system, in the manufacturer’s documentation. A broad product or family name may cover different configurations. Microsoft’s SMBIOS documentation explains that a product name may not enumerate configuration differences and that a system SKU can distinguish configurations, including those with different memory. Use the SKU or other specific configuration identifier when the manufacturer provides one. If you are checking an individual module, compare its SPD part number with the module maker’s specifications as well.
If Windows or a utility does not give a clear answer
- Do not classify the RAM from capacity, PC age, or a broad product-family name.
- Do not treat reported frequency as a generation label; type and frequency are distinct readings.
- Cross-check the exact PC model or SKU against the manufacturer’s specifications.
- If available, use the module’s SPD part number to check the stick itself.
- MSINFO32 provides general system information, but Microsoft’s cited guidance does not promise a DDR-generation field. It is also limited in Safe Mode. Microsoft: How to use System Information (MSINFO32)
What to check before buying replacement RAM
Identifying the installed generation answers only whether the current memory is DDR4 or DDR5. Before buying a replacement or upgrade, check the exact computer or motherboard specifications and the required memory type; a generic product name or a capacity match alone does not establish compatibility.
