To find out whether your PC can run a horror game, compare your computer’s actual specifications with the current requirements for that exact game. Check the processor, graphics card and video memory, RAM, Windows version, DirectX, storage space, and any SSD or performance notes—not just the GPU. Meeting minimum requirements is not a promise of smooth play at every resolution or setting.
1. Find the exact game’s current requirements
Open the game’s official store or publisher listing and find its minimum and recommended PC specifications. Record the complete list and any notes about resolution, frame rate, graphics settings, SSD, internet access, or required software. Requirements are specific to each game and may change, so check the listing again near the time you plan to buy.
Horror is a genre, not a hardware specification. For example, Until Dawn’s Steam requirements include separate minimum and recommended tiers, a DirectX 12 requirement, and a 70 GB SSD storage note. DEVOUR’s Steam listing specifies DirectX 11. Neither example tells you what another horror game requires.
2. Find your PC’s specifications
Use DxDiag on Windows
- Open Windows Search, type
dxdiag, and launch DirectX Diagnostic Tool. Microsoft explains how to check the DirectX version in the System tab and save a report using Save All Information…: Check which version of DirectX is installed. - On the System tab, note your Windows version and DirectX version. Save the report if you want a record of the details.
- Open the Display tabs and note the graphics device and its available information, including video memory if shown. If more than one display or adapter appears, check the other Display tabs too. A Steam developer announcement also describes using DxDiag to gather system and display information: Steam: collecting system information with DxDiag.
Some PCs, especially laptops, can have more than one graphics adapter. Confirm which device is relevant rather than assuming the name of one listed adapter settles the comparison.

Record these details
- Windows version and whether the game requires a particular version or 64-bit operating system.
- Processor model.
- Graphics card model and stated dedicated video memory (VRAM).
- System memory (RAM).
- DirectX version or other graphics API requirement.
- Free storage space and whether the game calls for an SSD.
3. Compare the whole list, category by category
Match each requirement with the corresponding PC detail. Compare processor to processor, graphics card and VRAM to graphics card and VRAM, RAM to RAM, and Windows and DirectX to the stated versions. Check that the drive has enough free space, and read whether an SSD is required or merely mentioned. Do not treat a similar-sounding model name or an unclear specification as proof of equivalence.
Extra notes can change what a requirement means. The Trepang2 Steam requirements, for example, associate its minimum tier with low 1080p at 30 FPS and its recommended tier with high 1080p at 60 FPS. Those are targets stated for that game, not a general promise for other titles or configurations.

4. Interpret minimum and recommended requirements carefully
Minimum and recommended tiers are useful only in the context the game provides. If your PC meets the minimum list but falls short of recommended, report that distinction plainly; do not turn it into a guarantee that the game will run smoothly at your preferred settings. If the listing gives a resolution, frame-rate, or graphics preset target, keep that target attached to the tier.
If a listed CPU or GPU has no clear equivalent in your PC, the comparison is uncertain. Look for information about that exact game and hardware combination or ask the publisher’s support channel; do not guess based on one component or on the game’s genre.

5. Use an automatic checker only as a cross-check
CanItRunPC describes comparing a PC’s specifications with minimum and recommended requirements carried from Steam pages. This can make a first-pass comparison more convenient, but that description does not establish perfect hardware detection or predict results for every PC configuration. Confirm that the checker has the correct game and detected components, then verify its comparison against the game’s official listing.

A reliable verdict depends on three things: the exact game and its current requirements, your PC’s actual components and software, and the performance target you care about. Without those details, no one can responsibly promise that a particular PC will run a particular game. If you share the game title, CPU, GPU, RAM, Windows version, available storage, and intended resolution or settings, those details make a more specific comparison possible.
