Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Check the exact Mac model against Asahi Linux’s device list, then inspect that model’s column and the matching SoC rows in the project’s M4 feature matrix. Do not treat an M4 device-tree entry or a kernel version by itself as proof that Linux can be installed and used as a complete desktop: the matrix accessed on October 4, 2026, lists no installer for its M4 models and shows support varying substantially by feature.
1. Identify your exact M4 Mac
Start with the full model, not just “M4.” The base M4, M4 Pro, and M4 Max are distinct support targets, and a shared chip family does not mean every chassis has the same peripherals or support status. Asahi’s M4 feature matrix and device list let you match the Mac to its identifier and SoC.
For example, the device list identifies the Mac mini (M4, 2024) as Mac16,10 / J773gAP / T8132 and the Mac mini (M4 Pro, 2024) as Mac16,11 / J773sAP / T6040. Use the row for your actual machine; do not substitute a different M4 model because its name or chip sounds similar.
2. Read both parts of the feature matrix
Find your Mac’s model column and check two kinds of rows:

The USB-C ports support high-speed data transfer, display output, and peripheral power, while Wi-Fi 6E keeps streaming, file transfers, and online work fast and reliable. From multiple peripherals to high-resolution displays, everything you need stays within easy reach.
- SoC-level blocks: shared silicon functions such as GPU, PCIe, DART, video, and power management.
- Model-specific devices: components tied to the particular Mac, such as display, keyboard, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, audio, and ports.
A working status for one row does not establish that other devices work. The matrix also notes dependencies: several peripherals rely on DART and PCIe support, so an incomplete underlying block can limit related devices.
3. Interpret the status labels correctly
| Matrix status | What it tells you | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Upstream kernel release number | The feature was incorporated into upstream Linux by the indicated release. | Check that your distribution’s kernel is that release or newer, and verify any other prerequisites in the row. |
linux-asahi (release) |
The feature is stable in the Asahi kernel path and is expected to be upstream by the indicated release. | Do not assume the feature is already present in a stock distribution kernel. |
linux-asahi or asahi-edge |
The feature is available through the named Asahi kernel path. | Availability in an Asahi kernel is not the same as support in a generic upstream kernel. |
WIP |
Work is in progress and is not ready for wider testing or distribution. | Do not count it as dependable support for normal use. |
TBA |
Active work is not underway; the project gives no readiness estimate for features that are not ready. | Do not plan around the feature being available on a particular schedule. |
| Device-tree entry | The hardware has an entry describing it to the operating system. | This is not evidence by itself of a working driver, a ready installer, or a usable system. |
These distinctions matter because “supported by Linux” can mean either incorporated into upstream Linux or available only in an Asahi-specific kernel. Asahi describes Apple Silicon as using a distinct boot environment: its machines are designed for macOS, while other operating systems must follow the macOS boot ABI. Booting a kernel and having working drivers for the hardware are separate questions. See Asahi’s Introduction to Apple Silicon.

4. Check the features your workload depends on
Use the matrix to answer a practical question: can this exact Mac run the tasks you need? Review the relevant rows individually rather than looking for one overall “supported” label.
- Basic desktop use: check installation, display, keyboard, trackpad or other input, and storage.
- Connectivity: check Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and the ports you plan to use.
- Media and calls: check audio, camera-related functions if listed, and video decoding or encoding relevant to your workload.
- Mobile and long-running use: check cpufreq, cpuidle, suspend or sleep, and any other power-management rows that matter to you.
Do not infer a working display from a boot framebuffer entry: that indicates limited early display output, not necessarily full display support. Likewise, an available storage path does not establish support for Wi-Fi, audio, or sleep.

5. What the M4 matrix showed on October 4, 2026
The live matrix accessed on that date covered M4 (T8132) and M4 Pro/Max (T604x) SoC blocks as well as individual M4 Mac models. It listed installer status as no for the M4 models. Their device-tree status was linux-asahi (7.4), which is not an installer status and does not mean the hardware is fully supported.
Many important blocks—including GPU, Thunderbolt, PCIe, DART, cpufreq, cpuidle, and suspend or sleep—were marked TBA. Some M4 video-decoder and NVMe work was WIP. Main display was generally described as boot framebuffer support through linux-asahi, with full support listed as TBA; the Mac mini M4 had no main-display entry in the table. Statuses for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, audio, input, and ports varied by model and were often TBA. Consult the live matrix for the exact machine and features you need; these project statuses can change.
Quick Recap
Rank #4
6. Make a go/no-go decision
- Match the Mac’s exact model identifier and SoC in Asahi’s device list.
- In the M4 matrix, inspect the matching model column and the relevant SoC-wide rows.
- Mark each required feature as upstream, Asahi-kernel-only, WIP, TBA, or absent, and check dependencies.
- Compare those statuses with your needs and the kernel path you intend to use; do not assume that a feature available only in an Asahi kernel is present in your distribution’s stock kernel.
- Recheck the live matrix before installing or purchasing hardware, because its entries are updated and the October 4, 2026 snapshot may no longer describe current status.
