To use Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 on the 6 GHz band, both your device and your router or gateway must support the relevant standard, and 6 GHz must be enabled and permitted in your region. Your internet plan does not determine Wi-Fi compatibility: it affects internet speed, not the wireless capabilities of your equipment.

Wi-Fi 6 does not necessarily mean 6 GHz

Wi-Fi 6 devices can use 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Wi-Fi 6E adds 6 GHz support, while Wi-Fi 7 equipment can also support 6 GHz. A product listing that says only “Wi-Fi 6” or “802.11ax” is not proof that it supports 6 GHz. Check the exact model specifications for an explicit Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 designation and 6 GHz support. Intel explains the difference between Wi-Fi 6 and 6 GHz-capable products.

Check each part of the connection

1. Find your device’s exact model and wireless adapter

Use the complete model number, not just a product family name. Look up the manufacturer’s official specifications or support page and confirm Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 explicitly. On a PC, check the installed wireless adapter as well as the computer model: the adapter determines the radio capabilities, and the computer maker may restrict replacement cards.

For a Windows PC, you can find the adapter name in Device Manager: right-click Start, select Device Manager, expand Network adapters, and note the wireless adapter’s full name. Use that name to find the adapter maker’s specifications. If you are considering replacing a card, check with the computer manufacturer that the specific card is supported. Intel recommends checking system-manufacturer compatibility for manually installed cards.

2. Check the router or ISP gateway

Find the router or gateway model on its label, in its administration app, or in its web interface. Then check the manufacturer’s specifications for Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 and explicit 6 GHz support. A router may support multiple Wi-Fi generations, but that does not mean every connected device uses the newest one. Microsoft recommends checking the router documentation or manufacturer’s website.

If your internet provider supplied the gateway, confirm its model and ask the provider whether it supports the generation you need and is approved for your service. Gateway models and provider policies vary; do not assume that a particular replacement or upgrade will work.

3. Check software, drivers, and regional availability

Hardware capability is not always enough. For Intel Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 adapters, Intel’s instructions specify Windows 11 and current drivers for 6 GHz use. For Wi-Fi 7 functionality on Intel Wi-Fi 7 products, Intel specifies Windows 11 version 24H2 or later and a Wi-Fi 7 router. These are Intel-specific requirements, not universal requirements for every computer or phone. Check the device maker’s current instructions for your setup. Intel’s 6 GHz instructions were reviewed February 6, 2025.

Also confirm that 6 GHz Wi-Fi is permitted in your country or region and enabled by the device maker for your product. Regional rules or manufacturer configuration can prevent a capable device from using the band. Apple notes that its devices use 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz where regional approval for 6 GHz is unavailable.

Your internet plan does not add Wi-Fi support

Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 describe the wireless connection between a device and an access point. Your internet plan describes the service delivered to your home. Changing to a faster plan cannot give an older router or adapter Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 capability.

The reverse is also true: a Wi-Fi 7 connection does not guarantee a particular internet speed. The service tier, modem or gateway, distance from the router, interference, and other network conditions affect the result. Intel notes that gigabit Wi-Fi speeds require capable Wi-Fi equipment and may also require gigabit internet service. Intel’s band comparison discusses these speed dependencies.

If you cannot see a 6 GHz network

A network name (SSID) alone does not tell you which band or Wi-Fi generation a device is using. If a 6 GHz network is missing, check the following before blaming your internet plan:

  • Confirm the exact client adapter and router or gateway both support 6 GHz.
  • Check the device’s operating-system, driver, and manufacturer requirements.
  • Verify that 6 GHz is permitted in your region and enabled in the router settings.
  • Check the router’s documentation or administration app for its band and network settings.
  • Confirm the device is within range. Microsoft says 6 GHz can perform strongly close to the router, but has shorter range and passes through walls less effectively than 2.4 GHz. See Microsoft’s guidance on Wi-Fi and home layout.

Network naming advice can differ by vendor. Microsoft suggests using separate names for 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz networks when you need to identify a band. Apple recommends using one network name across bands for its preferred setup. Follow the guidance for your devices rather than treating either arrangement as a universal requirement. When an equipment change may help

If your client supports 6 GHz but your router does not, a Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 router may enable a compatible connection, subject to regional availability and setup requirements. A new router will not make an unsupported client compatible. Before changing ISP-provided equipment, verify gateway, service, and provider compatibility.

A PC adapter replacement may be an option only if the computer manufacturer supports the specific card. Confirm compatibility for the exact system before buying; a replacement adapter is not a universal laptop upgrade.
