To find out whether a faster or larger SSD will work, identify your computer’s exact model and check its official specifications and service manual. Confirm the drive’s interface and protocol, physical size, available slot or bay, maximum supported capacity, and the system’s speed limit. “M.2” describes a drive’s form factor; it does not, by itself, mean the computer supports NVMe.

Start with the exact computer model

Look up the full model or product number on the computer’s label, in system settings, or on the manufacturer’s support page. Search that identifier on the manufacturer’s site and open the specifications and service manual for that exact model. Product-family names can cover configurations with different storage options, so specifications for a similar-looking computer may not apply. ASUS and MSI both direct users to their model-specific support information for storage details: ASUS support guidance and MSI storage upgrade guidance.

Check what is installed—and what can be added

On Windows, open System Information and go to Components → Storage → Disks to see details about installed drives. You can also search for Defragment and Optimize Drives to see the reported media type. These checks describe the current hardware; they do not establish which replacement or additional SSD the computer supports.

A compatibility scanner or selector, such as Crucial’s, can help identify system details and possible upgrade options. Treat it as a starting point, then verify the choice against the manufacturer’s specifications and service instructions: Crucial System Scanner.

Match the drive interface and protocol

Find out whether the computer supports a 2.5-inch SATA drive, an M.2 SATA drive, an M.2 PCIe/NVMe drive, or more than one type. These terms describe different compatibility requirements. In particular, an M.2 slot may support SATA, PCIe/NVMe, or both, and an M.2 drive that fits physically may still use an unsupported protocol. Dell notes that M.2 drives may support SATA or PCIe/NVMe, but not necessarily both, and that not every M.2 drive works in every system: Dell’s M.2 SSD FAQ.

Confirm physical fit and available space

For an M.2 drive, check the supported length as well as the interface and keying. For example, 2280 identifies one M.2 size; it is not a guarantee that every M.2 2280 drive is compatible. Check whether the required slot is present and free. For a 2.5-inch SSD, confirm the computer has the right bay and connections, and whether the existing drive must be removed to make room. MSI’s model-specific guidance covers supported ports, slots, lengths, and key/interface types: MSI storage upgrade guidance.

Check capacity and the computer’s speed ceiling

Use the exact model’s documentation to confirm its maximum supported storage capacity and the interface generation it supports. Do not infer a capacity limit from the connector or from another model in the same product line. Limits depend on the computer’s model and configuration.

A faster SSD may work in a system with a slower supported interface, but it will be constrained by the host’s PCIe generation and lane limit. Crucial’s T705 installation guide states: “Though NVMe SSDs are backward compatible (meaning a Gen5 SSD will work in a Gen4 system, etc.) they are not forward compatible, and you will not be able to achieve Gen5 performance in a Gen4 system.” In other words, a newer drive does not make an older computer operate at the newer generation’s maximum speed: Crucial’s PCIe speed guidance.

Prepare before installing

  1. Back up important files. Keep a separate copy before replacing or adding storage.
  2. Follow the exact model’s service instructions. Use the manufacturer’s manual for safe access and installation steps.
  3. Do not force the drive. If it does not seat or align, stop and recheck its dimensions, interface, and orientation.
  4. If the SSD is not detected, check that it is properly seated and that the manual lists the slot as supporting that drive type; consult the manufacturer’s support guidance if needed. Crucial also recommends checking fit and seating: Crucial SSD detection guidance.

Questions to settle before you buy

  • Will it fit? Verify the drive form factor, M.2 length if applicable, and the presence of a compatible open slot or bay.
  • Can I use an NVMe SSD? Only if the specific computer’s documentation confirms PCIe/NVMe support for the relevant slot.
  • What is the maximum SSD size? Use the stated limit for your exact model and configuration; do not assume a family-wide limit.
  • Will a faster SSD work? It may work if compatible, but the computer’s supported interface generation and lanes constrain its performance.
