To check whether your computer can run Photoshop smoothly, identify your Photoshop version and operating system, compare your CPU, RAM, graphics hardware, display, and free storage with Adobe’s requirements for that exact platform, then consider the size and complexity of the work you do. Meeting the minimum means your computer meets Adobe’s baseline; it does not guarantee that demanding projects will feel responsive.
1. Check the Photoshop version and your operating system
Photoshop requirements vary by version and platform, so note both before comparing specifications. Adobe’s Photoshop system requirements page provides the detailed, current table. It was updated September 9, 2026; check it again before buying or upgrading because supported systems and requirements can change.
Adobe’s supported versions page lists current 27.x and prior 26.x releases available through Creative Cloud Desktop and explains which versions receive technical support, security fixes, and bug fixes. Check the requirements for the version you actually use or plan to install—not just the newest version.
2. Find the computer specifications that matter
Use your operating system’s system settings to find its version, processor or chip, installed memory (RAM), graphics hardware, display resolution, and available disk space. The exact menu names differ between operating-system releases. If you are comparing computers, record the same details for each one.

When Photoshop is installed, its own report can make the check more direct:
- In Photoshop, select Help > System Info.
- Copy or review the report. It includes the Photoshop version, operating system, physical and logical processor counts, built-in memory, and memory available to Photoshop.
- Open Photoshop’s Performance preferences to see whether a graphics processor is detected and whether Use Graphics Processor is enabled. Adobe says a grayed-out option may indicate that the GPU does not meet requirements. If the setting turns off after a crash, a graphics-driver issue may be involved.
- In Performance preferences, review Available RAM and Ideal Range as well as the memory allocation setting.

3. Compare your computer with Adobe’s requirements
The figures below apply to desktop Photoshop 27.x and later. They are not interchangeable across operating systems: match your computer to the relevant platform section in Adobe’s requirements before drawing a conclusion.

Adobe recommends a fast internal SSD for installation and additional high-speed storage for scratch disks. The complete requirements table has further platform- and version-specific details; use it for your final check, especially before purchasing hardware.

4. Interpret minimum versus recommended specifications
A computer that meets the minimum may install and run Photoshop, but that baseline is not a performance guarantee. Adobe’s recommendation of 16 GB or more of RAM gives more headroom than the 8 GB minimum, particularly when Photoshop shares memory with the operating system and other applications.
Photoshop uses 70% of available RAM by default, according to Adobe. Adobe advises against allocating more than 85% of system memory to Photoshop because the operating system and other applications also need memory. Use the Available RAM and Ideal Range values in Performance preferences rather than increasing the allocation blindly.

5. Account for the work you actually do
Responsiveness depends on more than whether the computer clears the requirements table. Document size and complexity, available memory, GPU support, preferences, plug-ins, connected devices, other active applications, storage, and file location can all affect performance. Adobe also identifies network-drive latency and high-resolution displays as possible contributors to slowdowns.
Photoshop uses scratch storage to read and write image information when the system cannot keep it all in RAM. Memory access is faster than disk access, so a fast SSD can help a storage-constrained workflow, but it does not replace adequate RAM. Adobe describes scratch-disk use in its hardware and performance guidance.

6. If Photoshop is slow despite meeting requirements
- Check Available RAM and the allocation setting in Performance preferences. Close other memory-heavy applications and see whether that changes your usual workflow.
- Confirm that Photoshop detects the GPU and that Use Graphics Processor remains enabled. On Windows Intel/AMD systems, check that the graphics driver is current, as Adobe recommends.
- Try a representative project with its files stored locally rather than on a network drive. This can help identify storage or network latency as a factor.
- Consider whether unusually large or complex files, a high-resolution display, plug-ins, or connected devices are part of the slowdown. Adobe’s performance troubleshooting guidance covers additional causes and checks.
7. Check upgrade options before buying hardware
Before purchasing RAM or storage, identify the exact computer model and verify whether its memory or drive can be upgraded, and which components and interfaces it supports. Adobe’s general SSD recommendation does not establish that a particular drive will fit or work in a specific computer.
