To see how long your Chromebook is scheduled to receive automatic updates, open Settings > About ChromeOS > Additional details and look under Update schedule. The date shown applies to that specific device; for a work or school Chromebook managed by an administrator, ask them about its update policy.
Find your Chromebook’s update schedule
- Select the time area in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
- Select Settings.
- At the bottom of the settings navigation, select About ChromeOS.
- Select Additional details.
- Find Update schedule and read the final automatic-update date. Google’s screen wording may read: “This device will get automatic updates until [specified date].” Google’s instructions for checking a Chromebook’s update schedule describe this setting.
Update schedule is not the same as checking for an update now
The Check for updates control looks for a ChromeOS update that is available to install now. Update schedule instead tells you how long that device is scheduled to receive automatic updates. Use the latter to check the device’s planned end date.
What the date means
Google says that after a Chromebook receives its final software update, it no longer receives ChromeOS or browser updates. That includes security updates, bug fixes and new features. Apps that require particular ChromeOS or browser versions may also be affected. Google’s guidance for Chromebooks that no longer receive updates explains these effects.
Google’s policy page says ChromeOS devices receive ten years of updates and lists dates by model. That policy is useful context, but it does not replace checking the date for your device: the schedule depends on the particular device. You can also consult Google’s automatic-update policy and model list if you need to look up a model. The on-device schedule remains the direct check for the Chromebook in front of you.

If no end date appears
A work or school Chromebook may display “Updates are managed by your administrator” instead of an end date. Contact the organization’s administrator to find out which update policy applies to that device. Google gives the same direction for managed devices in its old-device guidance.
If the scheduled date has passed
A Chromebook may continue to work after its final update, but it will no longer receive automatic software or security updates. Google says users can continue using a working computer, while noting that it will not receive further software updates; switching to a newer Chromebook is another option. Its sample warning reads, “You can continue using your computer but should consider upgrading.” That is a warning shown for older devices, not a requirement that every owner replace a Chromebook.

If you decide to replace it, Google advises checking the automatic-update end date when choosing a Chromebook. Compare that date alongside your needs and budget; a model’s age alone does not tell you how long its updates will continue.
