To check whether an app or accessory will work, use the exact Chromebook model, the app or peripheral’s model and required features, and the connection it needs. Start with ChromeOS settings and Google’s current compatibility guidance, then confirm details with the manufacturer. Compatibility is not universal: an app may be unavailable on one Chromebook, and a peripheral may work only for some functions or through a particular port or connection.
Check Android app support on your Chromebook
- Update ChromeOS. An up-to-date system gives you the clearest view of available settings and app support.
- Look for Google Play Store settings. Open Settings and look for Google Play Store or Manage Google Play preferences. Google says that if this setting is absent, the Chromebook does not support Android apps. See Google’s instructions for using Android apps on a Chromebook.
- Search for the exact app in Play Store. Support for Android apps does not guarantee that every app works on every model. Google notes that some apps are unavailable for some Chromebook models; if the app cannot be downloaded, it may not be supported on that device.
- Check administration restrictions. On a work or school Chromebook, an administrator may block Play Store access or app downloads. Ask the organization’s administrator if the setting is missing or installation is restricted.
An app being available on your phone does not mean it is already installed on your Chromebook; Google says Chromebook users need to download apps again. Google’s recommended apps page can help you discover web and Play Store options, but its listings are not a guarantee that every app or feature will be available on your particular Chromebook.
Check Linux app requirements separately
Linux support is separate from Android app support. A Chromebook may support one environment without supporting the other. First check whether Linux can be enabled on your specific Chromebook, then compare the application’s hardware requirements with Google’s documented limits in its Linux development environment guidance.
Google says Linux on Chromebook does not yet support cameras, Android emulators, or hardware acceleration such as GPU acceleration and video decoding. Android devices are supported over USB in this environment, but other devices are not yet supported there. If an application depends on one of those functions or on direct access to other hardware, do not assume it will work just because the Linux environment launches.

Check an accessory’s model, connection, and required features
Before buying or troubleshooting a peripheral, write down its full model name, the function you need, and how it connects: Bluetooth, USB-A, USB-C, HDMI or DisplayPort, Wi-Fi, or wired network. Then check the Chromebook’s ports and the accessory’s current specifications. A port that fits a plug does not by itself establish that it supports every feature the accessory offers—for example, display output as well as basic USB data.
Google’s ChromeOS external-device guidance covers categories such as adapters, docking stations, drawing tablets, Ethernet adapters, storage, game controllers, keyboards, mice, microphones, monitors, headsets, webcams, printers, and cards. Google recommends peripherals carrying the Works With Chromebook certification. Treat certification as useful evidence for the certified product and its intended use, not as a blanket promise that every feature works with every Chromebook.

For instance, Google’s ChromeOS peripheral catalog lists the Belkin 3.0 USB-C to USB-A adapter as Works With Chromebook certified. It may be a suitable bridge when a USB-A accessory must connect to a compatible USB-C port, but check the adapter’s current specifications and the Chromebook port’s capabilities for the function you need.
Check file format for external storage
If a USB drive or other storage device is not recognized, check its file system as well as the connection and ChromeOS version. Google lists support for FAT variants, NTFS, and MTP; ISO9660 and UDF are read-only, as is journaled HFS+. Do not reformat a drive casually: reformatting erases its data. Back up important files before making any format change.

Pair supported Bluetooth devices
Bluetooth is suitable for supported device types such as keyboards, mice, speakers, headphones, and audio-only headsets. Google’s Bluetooth pairing instructions describe checking Bluetooth in Quick Settings, putting the accessory in pairing mode, choosing Pair new device, and confirming that it appears as connected.
- Open Quick Settings and confirm Bluetooth is available and turned on.
- Put the accessory into pairing mode, following its own instructions.
- On the Chromebook, select Pair new device and choose the accessory when it appears.
- Confirm the device shows as connected, then test the function you need.
A phone cannot be paired to a Chromebook over Bluetooth, according to Google. Use the supported phone connection flow instead of Bluetooth pairing.

Verify printer and scanner support by exact model
Search for the printer’s exact model on Google’s printer compatibility and setup page and check the manufacturer’s current support list. Google links to manufacturers including Brother, Canon, Epson, and HP, but warns that its list of other compatible printers is not comprehensive and that some listed printers may not be compatible. Lists can change, so check the current model information before purchase or setup.
Printing over Wi-Fi, network, or USB
For network printing, connect the Chromebook and printer to the same network. USB is another supported printer connection. When you select a printer in ChromeOS, the system checks compatibility. Google’s printer setup document states: “Currently, Chromebooks don’t support Bluetooth printing.” Do not buy a printer on the assumption that Bluetooth printing will work.

Scanning over a network
Google says most printers and scanners connected over Wi-Fi or a wired network can be used for scanning when both devices are on the same network; Bluetooth scanning is unsupported. To look for the Chromebook Scan app, open Settings and go to Printers and scanners. Confirm that the specific multifunction printer includes scanning hardware, and check the manufacturer’s information for model-specific requirements. See Google’s Chromebook scanning instructions.
Compare options against the task you actually need
When several apps or peripherals are candidates, compare them by the requirement that could make them fail—not by a general label such as “Chromebook compatible.” For accessories, check the exact model, manufacturer support or Works With Chromebook certification, connection type, available Chromebook ports, and the specific feature you need. For printers, compare the exact model and country, ChromeOS listing, print versus scan requirements, and whether you will connect by USB or the same network.
Google’s compatibility guidance and manufacturer lists are practical starting points, not timeless guarantees. App availability, ChromeOS support, settings labels, and product lists can change; verify the current information for your model and intended use before relying on a device.
