Check Settings > About phone > Android version (some devices say About tablet). WhatsApp’s published requirement is Android 6.0 or newer. If your device is below that, look for an official Android update and check the version again.
How to check your Android version
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone or, on a tablet, About tablet.
- Tap Android version. This screen also shows details such as the security update and build information, according to Google’s Android Help.
Menu labels and locations can vary by manufacturer and Android version. If you do not see the same path, search Settings for “Android version” or “Software update.”
What Android version does WhatsApp need?
WhatsApp’s supported-device guidance lists Android phones running Android 6.0 and newer. Its Android download page also states Android OS 6.0 or above as the minimum.
- Android 6.0 or newer: Your phone meets WhatsApp’s published Android-version requirement.
- Android 5.x or older: Your phone is below the published minimum; check whether an official system update is available.
Meeting the version threshold confirms only that the operating system meets this listed requirement. It does not guarantee that every installation, account, or device-specific condition will work.

How to check for an Android update
- Open Settings.
- Tap System, then Software update.
- Follow the on-screen instructions if an update is offered.
- After the update finishes, return to Settings > About phone/About tablet > Android version and confirm the installed version is 6.0 or newer.
Google’s general Android version and update instructions use this path, but the labels can differ by device. An older phone may not be able to run a newer Android version.
What if there is no update?
Update availability depends on the exact phone, its manufacturer, and the mobile carrier. Google notes that update schedules vary, so the Android version by itself cannot establish whether your model is eligible. Check your manufacturer’s or carrier’s support information for the device and region. If no official update brings it to Android 6.0 or newer, it does not meet WhatsApp’s published minimum.

If WhatsApp displays an upgrade notice, take it seriously: its Help Center says, “We’ll remind you a few times to upgrade your device to continue using WhatsApp.” That guidance does not specify a universal grace period or cutoff time for every device. WhatsApp says retiring older operating systems allows it to support newer ones and keep up with technology and security advances.
If your phone cannot be updated, a replacement Android phone that meets WhatsApp’s current requirement is one option. Check the exact Android version and ongoing manufacturer update eligibility before choosing a device; compatibility requirements can change.
