Start with your PC’s exact model—or the motherboard model in a custom desktop—and check its manufacturer specifications or service manual. For RAM, match the supported memory generation, module type, capacity, speed, and configuration. For an SSD, match the physical format, connector, interface, and supported length. An M.2 drive is not automatically compatible just because it fits an M.2 socket: the socket must support that drive’s SATA or PCIe/NVMe protocol.
Find your exact PC or motherboard model
A broad description such as “Dell laptop” or “gaming PC” is not enough to establish compatibility. Record the full computer model and, if available, its product variant. For a custom desktop, identify the motherboard model. Use the maker’s specifications, service manual, or model-specific compatibility list; vendor lookup tools can help narrow the options.
For a prebuilt PC or laptop, check the manufacturer’s support page for the exact model. For a custom desktop, use the motherboard maker’s documentation. Hardware support can vary by model revision, configuration, and BIOS version, so do not assume that another system in the same product family has identical limits.
Check RAM compatibility
RAM must match more than the shape of the slot. Confirm all relevant specifications before choosing a module or kit.

Match the memory generation and module type
- Generation: Confirm whether the system supports DDR4, DDR5, or another generation. Different DDR generations are not interchangeable.
- Form factor: Check whether the system requires desktop DIMMs or laptop SO-DIMMs. These module types differ physically.
- Slots and configuration: Check the number of memory slots and the supported module arrangement. An unused slot does not mean that any RAM module will work.
Check capacity, speed, and module support
Use the system or motherboard specifications to verify maximum total capacity, supported speed, and any supported module or rank configurations. If you plan to reuse existing RAM, identify its part number and compare its type and specifications with the system’s limits.
For older platforms, check for BIOS and DRAM-chip-density requirements as well. Kingston warns that some older DDR4 systems may not support modules built with 16Gbit DRAM chips, and that some newer DDR5 densities can require platform support or a BIOS update. These are system-specific conditions, not rules that apply to every DDR4 or DDR5 computer. See Kingston’s system-specific memory guidance.

Use a QVL or compatibility finder as a cross-check
A motherboard or system maker’s qualified vendor list (QVL), when available, identifies memory models tested for that system. A product’s absence from a QVL is not, by itself, proof that it is incompatible unless the manufacturer says so. Check the list alongside the full system specifications.
Kingston offers a memory lookup by system, motherboard, or part number. Crucial’s guide recommends checking motherboard specifications, inspecting sockets, or using a compatibility checker; its System Selector asks for manufacturer, make, and model. These tools are useful starting points, but confirm a result against the documentation for your exact system, particularly for older or BIOS-dependent hardware. See Kingston’s memory search and Crucial’s RAM compatibility guide.

Check SSD compatibility
First identify the storage bay or socket the exact computer supports. Then match the drive’s physical format and interface to the system documentation.
Confirm the drive format and interface
- 2.5-inch SATA: Verify that the PC has a compatible 2.5-inch bay and SATA connection.
- M.2 SATA: Check that the M.2 socket supports SATA drives.
- M.2 PCIe/NVMe: Check that the system supports PCIe NVMe in that socket. A socket that accepts an M.2 drive does not necessarily support NVMe.
For an M.2 drive, also verify the supported module length—for example, 2280 or 2242—and any specified connector or key requirements. The motherboard manual or PC service documentation should state which protocols and lengths the socket supports. Gigabyte’s model-specific M.2 QVL illustrates the distinction by listing SATA and PCIe drives separately and including different drive lengths: Gigabyte’s M.2 compatibility list.

Verify NVMe support with the system maker
PCIe NVMe support depends on the motherboard or system, not simply on whether a drive fits the socket. Intel’s installation guidance directs users to confirm PCIe NVMe support with the computer or motherboard vendor: Intel’s NVMe installation guidance.
Also check the system’s stated capacity limits and supported interface generation. A drive may work while operating below its advertised maximum speed if the host system supports a slower interface; do not assume the drive’s headline speed is what the PC will deliver.

Separate drive compatibility from operating-system migration
Matching the SSD to the system confirms the hardware fit; it does not move your files or operating system. If replacing a boot drive, check the PC maker’s service instructions and separately plan whether you will migrate the existing installation or reinstall the operating system. The appropriate process depends on the system and your setup.

- Identify the exact computer or motherboard. Record its complete model and product variant where available.
- Open the maker’s specification or service manual. Confirm the supported memory or storage slots and limits for that precise model.
- Compare the proposed part’s specifications. For RAM, check generation, DIMM/SO-DIMM type, capacity, speed, and module configuration. For an SSD, check format, interface or protocol, supported length, and any stated capacity limit.
- Check model-specific qualifications. Look for QVL entries, BIOS requirements, density restrictions, and revision-specific notes.
- Use a compatibility finder as a second check. Enter the exact model or part number, then compare its result with manufacturer documentation.
- Choose only a part that meets the documented requirements. Evaluate price, warranty, or endurance after the compatibility checks, rather than using those features to infer compatibility.
What to compare once a part is compatible
Compatibility narrows the choices; it does not establish that one product is best. For RAM, compare supported capacity and stick arrangement, speed, module or rank support, and price or warranty. For SSDs, compare physical format, SATA versus PCIe/NVMe support, module length, capacity, host interface generation, and price or endurance. The system’s supported interface determines which drive features can be used.
