To reduce the risk of buying counterfeit luxury sneakers, verify the exact model and release, compare several details against reliable references for that shoe, and check whether any resale-platform authentication process applies to the specific listing. No single box, tag, receipt, QR code, logo, or visual detail proves a pair is authentic.
Identify the exact sneaker before comparing it
Start with the brand, model, colorway, release version, and style or product code. Use the code and other identifying details to find a brand or established-retailer reference for that precise release. Similar colorways or different years can have small but legitimate differences, so comparing with a broadly similar shoe can lead to false alarms.
If the listing does not identify the release clearly, ask the seller for the product code or other information needed to identify it. Treat an unexplained conflict between the listing and the shoe’s apparent model or code as a reason to pause and verify further—not as conclusive proof of a fake.
Ask for photos that let you compare the pair
Request clear, current photographs of both shoes and the details that can be compared with the exact release reference:

Check that the photos appear to show the same pair throughout. Compare multiple details rather than relying on one feature. eBay says its authenticators inspect shoe structure, materials, tags, logos, packaging, and accessories; those are useful comparison areas, but eBay’s process does not make any one detail a conclusive home test. eBay’s description of Authenticity Guarantee explains its stated process.
A pocket magnifier can help you see small details such as stitching or label printing, but closer inspection is not authentication. A clean-looking label or logo cannot establish that the whole pair is genuine.

Interpret mismatches and seller behavior cautiously
Inconsistent product codes, model details, construction, logo placement, or unexplained differences between the listing photos and the item deserve further verification. A box, receipt, tag, QR code, or seller assertion can be copied or separated from the shoes; none alone proves authenticity.
Consider the transaction as well as the item. Look for a seller history you can check, consistent answers, original detailed photographs, a protected payment route, and written return terms. Pressure to move off-platform, refusal to provide more photos, or an implausibly attractive price are reasons for caution, not proof of counterfeiting.

Check the authentication path for the exact listing
Marketplace authentication is not one uniform service. Policies and routes can vary by listing, condition, marketplace site, delivery destination, and whether an item ships to a verification facility or directly to the buyer. A platform’s process is its own stated policy, not an independent guarantee. Check the badge or verification status on the listing itself and read the current terms before paying.

Across platforms, compare the verification method, exact-listing eligibility, shipping route, how discrepancies are handled, return and refund rules, total cost, and whether the service applies to your delivery location. These details can matter as much as the headline authentication claim.

Document the pair and act promptly after delivery
- Before paying, save the listing, seller messages, stated condition, and relevant authentication or return terms.
- When the package arrives, photograph it and the shoes before removing tags or altering the item.
- Compare the delivered pair with the listing and the reference for its exact release.
- If something does not match, use the platform’s stated reporting route promptly and keep the receipt, package, and records while the issue is reviewed.
What counterfeit figures can—and cannot—tell you
